I prefer more layers and subtleties than power chords can provide for the music in my head.

Learn inverted power chords and try "lurching ahead" when playing P Chords.

Its wonderfull and adds to ones music

Now let's stop and think about this. What seems more difficult. Playing power chords or being a pussy and playing in drop D or open G tuning so you hold down two strings to sound like you're playing a barre chord? If you're going to call yourself a technical guitarist, then play the guitar the way it's meant to be. Tuning it some odd way just to make a different sound doesn't make you a good guitarist, it just makes you a pussy.

I'll leave you with this. You people here idolize Steve and Mike Turner, both who use the drop D tuning. Well, Chris Carabba from Dashboard Confessional does the same thing, except he plays faster than Mike Or Steve. So does that make Chris better? There's nothing difficult about taking the half-assed way out to play the guitar. I'd rather be honest and play what I can easily (power chords) than tune my guitar and fake it.

johnny reznik is the best person i know for completely retuning a guitar and for all intents and purposes, playing open chords all the time

they must have to switch guitars for every song onstage

Yeah. I suppose having people spend hours on making your hair look like you just got out of bed and having no discernable guitar talent makes you a pussy magnet, eh?

Not when it comes to playing the guitar he doesn't. I am sure if you spend a week with someone, they can play any of those Goo Goo Dolls songs. He holds down one string when he plays. Fuck, I could do that, and I don't see myself getting swarms of the bitches.

a lot of bands have strange tunings. like the tea party and those guys are fucking talented like crazy. alternate tunings don't mean you can't play guitar.

i like rivers cuomo on guitar. and mike turner. jade puget.

Yeah using alternate tunings just opens up a world possibilities for a musician.

my favorite players would be Jag Tanna (IME), John Fruciante(RHCP), and Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction and just about every pop star in the business),

James Black (f11) and Nigel Pulsford (bush) get honorable mentions too

PS I'm leaving out guitar greats like Page and Hendrix because well those guys are already assumed

yeah, I gotta go with jag tanna and dave navarro and to that list I would also add daniel johns(silverchair) and edge(u2, although he can almost be assumed)

I would also like to add to those of you who are bashing alternate tunings that make stuff easy to play, that music doesn't have to be complicated or hard to play to be good. Take Purple Haze by jimi hendrix, classic song by one of if not the great guitar player ever, and it's not at all complex or hard to play. the guitar solo at the end is just ONE note over and over with a bunch of bends. So is jimi hendrix a pussy because his music is easy to play? of course not and neither are some of these other people who's music is simple or easy to play.

Well, here's the way I see it. Power chords, if used correctly sound damn good, are not complicated, but people bash music for using them because they're so "basic." Well, that only means the people that insult the music I like for using power chords are looking for something complicated and technical.

So all these people now look for something advanced and complicated. They turn to bands that use barre chords and 7ths and shit. People think it's so great that people are able to play these chords, when in most cases, they just tune the guitar a little differently and produce that sound by playing a bunch of open strings. I see nothing all that complicated in tuning a guitar a different way to produce the barre chord sound. If you want to play all these chords, be true to the music. Play it the way it's meant to be played. If you want to play a barre chord, you play a barre chord. Don't half-ass it by turning some keys at the top and holding down a string or two to produce some great sound.

So when people respect power chords and all their greatness, I will respect guitarists that just tune their guitar differently to hold down two strings to play such a "complicated" chord. That is all.

but if the songs are good (assuming they are, maybe not) then I don't think it matters.

yeah, i've never actually looked into Jag Tanna's tuning style, although i assume he doesn't down tune, but even if he does fuck it, go listen to the music it kicks almost all the guitar players asses out there, it's all about the music folks

PS not really too much of a point to that

The most common complaint I hear about punk music is that "it sucks because they just use power chords, over and over again." I see no difference in playing power chords and playing a bunch of open strings. That's just what I feel. If you can't hack it and play real barre chords and 7ths and diminished chords, then you really shouldn't attempt playing them.
