A Canadian speaking the truth....
don't ban venom. he's no better and no worse then the rest of us. we've all done some flaming. i told some guy to hurry up and die and i'm still here.
how about we encourage a free & open discussion area with the threat of censorship not hanging over our heads? some things have been said that were unkind and the bigger men will apologize for them. venom is the most self-righteous one way believer i've ever been exposed to so i can't expect him to find fault in his behavior but banning him is not a solution.
you can't force somebody to be rational. if he's bothering you, i suggest you just ignore him until he either changes his tune or leaves on his own.

First Doug is right.....for a change lol.....also look back I did apologize to Alan so I guess that makes me the bigger man....anyway before I leave I'm still waiting for Alex's solution to the problem she feels is being delt with wrongly. Lata

My beef is with the policies of the government and with the underlying "money over everything" theme
Money over everything huh?? What about the billions of dollars that our government is sending to Africa to help in the AIDS epidemic?? What about the millions of dollars in food and supplies we are now giving the Iraqi civilians?? What about the Billions we are spending on this war ALONE to rid the world of Hitler Part II??? Yeah we are all about money!
Quote:
Ridiculous. My claim is not that Saddam is a good leader or that he is disarmed, but only that the United States government is only worsening the situation through "fuck-you" foreign policies.
Fuck you policy?? We have givin Saddam 12 YEARS to rid himself of his weapons!! What has he done to help that process along??? He has thrown the inspectors out when they got too close. How can you honestly say he has done anything to help his cause and his people from what is going on now??? 12 YEARS!!! How long are we supposed to give him Alex??? Just so I can get a sense of where your "outside" influences are comming from would you tell me where you parents are from? Maybe you're right I'm not as well travelled as you, but I hear outside politics all the time. I work with a Thaiwanese doctor, I lived with a Serbian immigrant, and have been lifelong friends with a Russian guy. In all these cases have extensively discussed politics.

Please dispense with the childish mewling. I, like many other people here, have a great deal of respect for other people on this board whose opinion (!!!key word!!!) differs from mine, such as Corey and Reno, because they express those views in a logical and civil manner. I am sorry to say that you don't seem to have gained a similar level of respect for your thoughts. However, you cannot blame that on me.
Look at how my discussions started. I was very civil until Axtech started with the language flaming followed by you. The "discussions" quickly turned to full blown fights because until I got here no one backed the US with any emotion or proof. I upset you to the point of flaming me because I could back my government up with more than adequate arguements. I have proven the all-mighty doug wrong on countless occasions. We have proved that he will back anyone thats against the US no matter how evil. Doug is just one of those guys that gets atttention by criticizing the government. He finds bogus websites to try and prove his points and acts like they are total fact. You're right Doug they are "independent" sources, but from the mouths of peole just like you that will back any conspiracy they can come up with.
So Alex do me a favor with your huge IQ please tell me how you would have delt with Iraq? Then I'll throw some well thought out contingencies at you. You must keep in mind international laws and policies of the US government. So go ahead. Blow my mind. After 12 years how would you have rid the world (because no one argued in the UN that he needed to go) of Saddam Hussein and his weapons. Also tell me why we deserved 9/11 because you did say that!
wow I just fell upon this topic now... see what happens when you aren't around for a couple days?
My view of things (having family on both sides of the bother, a father in Buffalo and a mother in Niagara), The two countries are similar when compared to any other two countries in the world. For the most part you couldn't line us up and tell us apart, but from I've seen, Canadians are greatly different than Americans in mindset and manner. Having spent a lot of time in the US I really don't understand the way of thinking that Americans have. I always feel like its an everyone for themselves way of living whenever I'm there. I can generalize things by saying Canadians are nicer, and more caring for one another, but of course not everyone is like that. As a whole though I do get the sense that a large percent of Americans are ignorant, and are merely concerned with themselves. I've seen it firsthand when being in the presence of my American family and their friends, and on countless trips to the states for hockey tournaments. I know I'm not describing everyone so please do not be offended.
Now Venom... I understand you are oozing with patriotism but there are facts that you have not considered. First off Canada was named the top nation in the world to live in by the UN for 7 years in a row (it may in fact be more but I lost count) They finished out of the top place only because of a homeless problem that is occuring in Major cities at the moment.
I've never had problems with the health care system and I and my family have probably used it more than our fair share. If it wasn't for our health care system my Grandfather would be dead right now, as he has had 6 heart attacks resulting in 2 quad bi-passes and a minor stroke. I myself have had numerous broken bones and just recently within the last 2 years had wrist sergery. I was able to see one of the top doctors in NA for my wrist thanks to our health care system (he is a doctor with the Torornto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, the Canadian natl Rowing team, and the Canadian Natl cross country team just to name a few.) if I or my grandfather lived in the states my gandfather would be dead right now because of the huge hospitals bills that he would need pay and I would still not be able to move my wrist for the same reason. My father who as I said lives in the US has had to live with a broken nose for nearly 10 years because he would be unable to pay for the sergery and time in the hospital, and he makes around 60-70 grand a year.
Yes I agree that there are flaws but everyone has a fair chance to get the care they need and what exactly is wrong with that? Yes, people can go to the states to get imediate care if they wish but if they had patience (because if the problem was serious they would admit them before another person who wasn't in emergency need) they would be able to take advantage of the health care system we have.
When it comes to businesses I will give Americans the advantage there, but
I believe that Canada is in fact just as the UN has announced on numerous occasions the greatest place to live in the world. Just recently Vancouver Canada was named the 2nd greatest city in the world as well. Not too sure what that means to you but I know being Canadian, having that honour bestowed upon my country is a great thing.
As for the Americans protecting Canada, it's true. The two countries do depend on eachother in one way or another. Canada depending on the states more since we are not as large of a country on the economic scale, but we provide a lot to a great amount of Americans, such as our timber industry.
Our countries combining is not the answer. It would do nothing to help the world nor the people of Canada and the USA. We have different histories, cultures, ideals, and mindsets, the two would clash horribly and I would bet there would be a large upheaval in Canada concerning the issue, as Canadians are pretty well brought up to believe in the Canadian Identity, not the American Dream.
Also since when does Age constitue wisdom? sure you may have some more experience but nothing to the degree where your opinion means more than someone elses. If that were the case we would all agree with 100 year old men, with no matter what they thought

I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

I agree with most of your post except this
The UN is a joke. I can go into why they probably say this but it'll just cause a mess and we're kinda good on the mess scale at the time. I'll save it for another day.

I think that's another difference. Many Canadians are pro-UN while Americans view it as a waste. Whether or not you agree with them doesn't discourage the fact that they named Canada the top country in the world for nearly a decade. That's quite the feat by anyones standards. It's not as if they're throwing darts to pick a winner, they do research to compile their list of nations.

UN rating: The once much emphasized fact by many Canadian nationalists. Until recently Canada has been rated #1 by the UN. The 2001 UNDP report rated Canada as #3 overall, and the United States #6. However, Canadians and Americans alike shouldn't feel too bad about this. The United Nations is an organization which has very noble humanitarian causes, such as 'ending world hunger', 'eliminating racial and gender inequalities', 'reducing the economical gap between the rich and poor' as well as others. These are all problems that if could be fixed, would make the world a better place. However, like many large international organizations, the UN is highly political, and rather than using pure statistics and facts, they also use arbitrary 'ratings'. For example, the UN not only calculates the actual life expectancy for a country, they also use a life expectancy rating. Canada is very narrowly above the US in life expectancy, but when the figure is used twice, this makes the gap seem higher than it is in reality. The UN also only tends to look at one side of the picture, the humanitarian side. An arbitrary rating that is used is a "Human development index rating", which rates the perceived progress of a country in humanitarian efforts. Another arbitrary rating for deciding a country's overall rating is 'quality of life'. Strangely however, taxation, expendable income, and GDP per capita (in actual currency value) are not calculated into this. Another interesting point to consider is that assuming the state of California was given the same arbitrary ratings as the United States, California if counted as a country would rank above Canada. In any case, the UN rate both Canada and the United States very high, even if it is not dependent upon actual facts alone.
The US is #1 in "The World Competitiveness Scoreboard"

Do either of these really matter? No.

It can mean something to you if you want it to. As a Canadian I'm proud of knowing that my country was #1 for so long. Whether or not it means anything to the rest of the world I don't know, but either way that's something I'm proud of

Venom reminds be a lot of the 3 Doors Down lead singer. I do like their music but saw them a couple of weeks ago, in Memphis(Yes I am American), and he made a comment and ended it with, "and that is why we are the best country in the world". For some reason I can see Venom making that comment. Do people not realize that when we makes comments like that, it gives people a reason to not like us? I know not all, but a whole lot of Americans are so fucking arrogant. I know gun deaths is only something small when you think about how good/bad a country is, but Venom tell me this, if we are so much better than Canada, why do they have an extremely lower gun death rate? I personally love Canada. I want to eventually move there someday. I agree, some countries could be in a better state but no country is better than another and the U.S. can stop trying to be a world police force and fix the shit in OUR own country first before we go and try and fuck with others.

whoa there, nothing wrong with a little pride. so the lead singer of three doors down has pride in his country, does it really matter? alot of people love their country all over the world, are they wrong? People always say their country is the best damn country around, so what?
Whenever death may surprise us,
let it be welcome
if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear
and another hand reaches out to take up our arms.
Nobody's gonna miss me, no tears will fall, no ones gonna weap, when i hit that road.
my boots are broken my brain is sore, fer keepin' up with thier little world, i got a heavy load.
gonna leave 'em all just like before, i'm big city bound, your always 17 in your hometown

it's ok to say amoung yourselves, but when it's said to people of another nation it's just rude and ignorant

i have been guilty of saying canada is the best country in the world, mostly while watching the olympics
but, even though i have pride in it, i have to admit we DO have problems some other nations dont. its when your pride blinds you to the problems of your own nation and greatness of others that is the problem.
why was this thread opened up again? i thought we all agreed that all this was doing was just pissing people off...
