Josh, you need to learn how to play chords before you make the jump up to like a Strat. As soon as you can master simple chords and simple songs, then you should seriously think about getting yourself something better. Oh yes, and I hope you started off on an acoustic....

You really don't need lessons to learn how to play. Just go around on the internet. Any site pertaining to playing music should give basic lessons on how to start off by plucking strings on the guitar, then moving on to stuff like power chords, and then to barre chords. If you can get yourself to play barre chords and recognize where they are on your guitar, then yes, go ahead and buy yourself something nicer than a mass produced acoustic guitar. If you don't have the desire to play your guitar all the time and learn how to really play songs, then don't bother trying to get a new guitar.

Strats are very nice. It would just be easier to work on your guitar skills on an acoustic. So really, have your parnets throw out like $80, get a piece of shit acoustic, start playing songs on there, and watch how easy your Strat gets played. If you just get over the beginner's hump, you'll rock out like no other. You just have to want to play it a lot.

The funniest thing is, I know all this great advice for playing the guitar, but I always get tripped up when I try to play barre chords. I just started playing since, let's say December, and now I can play most punk songs and I can play a lot of bass songs. Just keep working at it Josh, the music will come to you if you just keep working on it. Also, don't flip out because you can't get your fingers to hit the frets correctly at first, you will learn how to stretch them out quite nicely and since you're young, your fingers can still grown
