Well, I don't want to defend afirmative action, but the premise of this is "black kids live in the inner city, therefore, they are expected to have a worse education than a white kid." Obviously, that is not entirely true, because last time I checked, there are some pretty successful minorities out there that have children getting an elite education, yet they still get the extra 20 points.
This is truly bullshit. I cannot state this enough. My friend Bartosz is from Poland and we went to the same high school. He moved here on a student visa about 8 years ago, and he scored incredibly well on all of the standard tests and his GPA was high. We had similar grades where mine was a bit higher (the funny thing is, he scored the highest in my school on all the english sections, and he hasn't been in the country nearly as long as anyone in my old high school) and we both were rejected. A kid that scored 0.5 lower on his GPA and much lower on his standardized tests gets into U of M because his grandfather immigrated to America. Tell me how that is fair.
Another thing, I had a 3.6 GPA at one of the toughest schools in America (it was named one of the top 10 in like Newsweek or something) and somehow it counted against me when it came to getting into colleges. Kids that go to public schools and take classes like "auto shop" and "home economics" got into U of M with similar grades as I had, and I didn't. They were also the same color as me. Go figure, right? I get punished for taking real, AP classes when I could have slacked off for 4 years, get a higher GPA, and at least get the wait list to U of M.
Just remember, if you want to apply to U of M and you're white, a 3.6 GPA at one of the top schools in America, a 26 on the ACT, and activities out the ass mean nothing. If your grandfather is from another country that fits the minority category, a 3.0 GPA and a 20 on your ACT is good enough to get you into U of M. If you have similar grades to mine and you're not a minority, don't bother applying, you won't get in.
