What I don't get is how some people who smoke are totally against drinking and some people who drink are totally against smoking. Makes me chuckle.

because they want to look cool. other people drink, so you have to. socially drinking means not getting trashed. i dont even like the taste of beer, i would prefer pop or something of that nature any day (considering beer isnt legal for me) but still. if you are socially drinking you are not going to drink enough to feel the effects of too much alcohol.

then why drink at all? i don't see why if you have to drink just because other people are

i can answer that bro:
because booze tends to relax people and make them open up a little bit. secondly it tastes good, there is some mixed drink out there somewhere that is just perfect for you and/or everyone else in the world. what better way to chill with friends then by drinking a madras, relaxing and socializing with great people, and at the same time getting nice and "toasty". sure you could drink water or juice, that's fine too. it's like asking why people play soprts or something, they just want to. and if they want to that's fine.

why do people play sports?? because it is actually GOOD for you. last time i checked beer wasn't good for your liver. plus its fun. without hurting you. (unless you get hit in the head by a ball)

you know. if you're of legal drinking age, you can drink all you want. i could give a shit. but underage drinking pisses me the fuck off. is it seriously that fucking important that you can't wait?

no, because sports are fun, you don't have to play a sport just to get in shape, you can just do excercises, those are good for you too. and actually beer drank regularly reduces your chances for stroke and heart attacks. now if you get trashed every day then your liver will be gone by the age of 30, but drinking moderately will be good for you. football, hockey, and even basketball is physical. people get hurt playing sports all the time. there's not a damn thing on this earth that is not going to hurt you.

yes, but playing sports will automatically get you in shape if you play a lot? does beer get you in shape? i dont think so. there is no athletes anonymous. i would rather say i got hurt or broke something playing a sport than say i needed a liver transplant because i drink.

I'm jumping in on this conversation a bit late. I believe it was originally about drinking AND driving and I can't think of anything dumber. People who do that should be stabbed in the face. eh hem. But anyways....
I used to think the same way a lot of you do. The whole "what's the point of drinking?" mindset when I was the same age. In fact, I still believe that minors shouldn't drink and that getting drunk is the dumbest thing ever.
After turning 21, though, I started drinking when going out to dinner and stuff and I enjoy it because it does relax you, especially after a long day of work. I have never been drunk and never plan to. There just isn't a point to it. But as for the casual drink and going out with some buddies, I don't see the harm as long as you're responsible.
I still cringe everytime I hear someone say "Let's get wasted!!" or "We were hammered last week"... or anything along these lines. It sounds so junior high to me. (no offense to those still in junior high)

or a prostetic hip like bo jackson, or a prostetic leg like the kid from San Jose State, or minus one finger like ronnie lott, or missing teeth like god knows how many hockey players. oh and lets not forget the countless boxers that can't even remember their own name or the trendy face masks that alot of basketball players use to hold their face together while they play. cause that's your complaint right? people drink because they want to be cool and stuff right? now sports are great and i love them dearly, but let's face it, there is much more danger playng something then by having a few cold ones.
now i'm an underage drinker, till aug. kids have to make mistakes, cause that's a part of learning. i don't know how old you are, and it doesn't matter, the truth is that all young people live like they are invinceable to everything bad or wrong in the world. you cannot tell me that you never thought that yourself, and if you even try telling me otherwise, i'm flat out calling you a damn liar. and even so, are they your kids? why should you be worried about a few punks that drink? let them do their thing and you do yours. that's their mistake, their lives, and your not in charge of them. now when the time comes that they make a mistake and it affects you, let them know! raise all sorts of hell and do something about it. then the punk will learn better but until then they're going to raise hell until someone teaches them a lesson.

sorry, but boxing is stupid. its basically trying to kill the other person in the ring, but not. sports like tennis are not about contact. the only thing you touch is the ball, and the worst that could happen is you fall and hurt yourself. all the sports accidents you mentioned are probably contact sports. take up running. "ooh the wind knocked me down and now i'm paralyzed." no one said all sports have to be about contact. take up fucking ping pong. kids have to make mistakes to learn? no they dont. some are intelligent enough to know not to do something the first time around. i do not think i am invicible in the least bit. their mistake their lives? but that doesnt work when their mistake interferes with other peoples lives, like in the aforementioned website on the first page. most kids are too young to handle drinking, more or less driving.

Jeff.
legal age is a dumbass law imposed by a nanny-state.
if you think you're old enough to drink, then you can. if you later live to regret it, well, that was a choice you made. it's the same thing as when you think you're old enough to wipe your own ass, or tie your own shoes.
it's a choice that the individual makes for himself. it's got nothing to do with the government, or you, or I, or anybody else. It's up to him. You can only make choices for you.

Don't lump everyone into one category though. I don't drink to be "cool" or to "fit in" ... maybe when I was younger like 16 or so but I'm too old now to give a damn about what others think now.
Plus a lot of the people participating in this discussion are all under age or haven't even had a drink yet .. so it's one thing to be of legal age and know what it's like and a completely other thing to be under age and having never tried a drink before. You can't look down on someone for something you've never tried.
