New Song
so olp didn't play Dreamland at either of their shows?
Interesting, I'm actually starting to think that nothing is really set in stone yet..I mean, Dreamland was being touted as being single material two months ago and now OLP just went through two concerts without even touching it.
Remember that OLP didn't mention anything about this whole "return to cryptic lyrics" thing until around March or so. For all we know, everything we heard so far is all music that was written last year sometime and OLP may not even have any future plans with it at all.
Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Illusion: When/where exactly did OLP mention that there'd be a "return to cryptic lyrics"? I know Raine had mentioned a few times in interviews that the new album was to be kind of "a return to Naveed, but more mature", but Raine has often said that a new album of theirs was going to be a throwback to Naveed, like Spiritual Machines, which was nothing like Naveed.
I think the reason they didn't play Dreamland is simply because they've recorded 17 songs already, and playing the same one again would be repetitive. I don't know. I'm secretly hoping there's gonna be some sweet nostalgic lyrics and guitar solos in the new album, but I'm not holding my breath. Plus, if they had managed to accomplish this, why do you think they're holding off on playing any of it at concerts? So far their new material sounds a lot like a variation on HIPT or the Hunter's Lullaby. Anyway, it's just my 2 cents. We'll have to wait until 2009 to find out (or 2011, or 2020
)
Also: I noticed that Raine has finally dropped those silly hats, as per the vids from the 9/11 concert. My God I hated those. Like the one he wore during the "A Decade" concert feature. So anti-OLP.

I'd like to add that, even though that chorus lyric is not so good in The Right Stuff, man that's a fucking catchy song. I've had that shit stuck in my head all weekend.
If they want to write some songs to make some cash, go for it. Write a hundred. If they have fun making the music and performing it, I hope they make themselves extremely happy.
This album is almost all on them. The evil corporate machine will not be touting the music this time, only distributing it.
Bob Rock caused Raine's voice to change? Give me a break. You hit the high notes nightly for 7 or 8 years and see how your throat feels in the morning. You'd change the way you sang too, and don't try to say you wouldn't.
Mike influencing lyrics? Two words: Fair Ground. "Falling into the ceiling, I think I'm seeing upside down."
The days of thinking up clever ways to say "I'm all alone in this world and nobody understands what I'm going through" are over. The have grown past that, and so has their audience.
I'm very interested to hear a studio version of White Flag, and Dreamland.

Nothing is EVER set in stone with these guys, until the album is printed and distributed and sold. So any songs you may hear now may very well not make it onto the album. Remember HIPT? They recorded like 50 songs (or some extreme number), and only how many made it onto the album? They demoed songs with their crowds for months before they made a decision.
So anything you may hear in concerts right now may just end up as concert music.

I remember Raine mentioning in a March interview that he was hoping that he would be able to get back to the more "poetic scenes" in his ealier albums.
Here's the quote:
[/quote]Gazette: It seemed like you were trying to become a more direct lyricist even before this album - the last few Our Lady Peace albums weren't nearly as metaphorical as what you were doing on Naveed or Spiritual Machines.
RM: Yeah, I know. That's something that I'm struggling with. I might be able to get back to that place. I think that was definitely Bob Rock trying to push me in that direction. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that, to be honest. I think what this solo record does for me is it's given me a way to do that, but in a much more comfortable setting. I'm not sure - it might be a combination of the music in the background supporting the words - but yeah. I listen to those records that you just mentioned, and yeah: For rock music, I'm more apt to do that. I like more hiding behind the music a bit and not being so direct. I don't know. Hopefully this gets that out of my system and I can get back to a little bit more of the creative poetic scenes on some of those records.

Creative and poetic does not translate directly to cryptic.

Good point. This all goes back to what's been said many times before by both us and the band themselves, they're vastly different people now than they were 11 or 12 years ago. I'm not married and I don't have children but on an emotional and creative level, that has to change you immensely. Not to mention the work that Raine's done in Iraq and Darfur.
Kind of unrelated but yet still somehow connected, I remember reading an interview a couple months ago with Andrew McMahon of Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate about his writing process and how when you're younger, alienation and the whole make-up/break-up thing become really easy sources of inspiration when you're writing. And he talked about how after getting married and settling down, it took him a really long time to kind of get his voice back again. Life happens and it changes both you and you're art. It's just the way things are..

It's true. Look at how many "new" songs we heard during the tail end of the Gravity era that never again saw the light of day. Or songs that we heard snippets of or live versions and then watched them be transformed into something totally different. Or how it took what? A month, month and a half of continually pushing back the release of Where Are You? because of an apparent last minute decision to re-write a chorus.

....I don't recall this at all.
Apparently if I don't read about people bitching on here, I don't think it happens. Go figure.
Also, I really love this discussion right now. I'm not particularly excited about hearing new material or anything because I know that its probably not for another year yet, but this has been the first legitimate discussion of the band... just doing stuff, in like ages.
I mean personally, I didn't care at all about the Greatest Hits album, or Raine's solo deal. Not my thing. So the last time there was any kind of cool news or potential new song discussion like this was back when there were clips released off the HIPT demos?
I'm just saying, it's cool to get back to what the CM was all about, and not just spamming.

A lot of what Raine wrote about is what he's still interested in though. How many OLP songs are about religion, better yet, spirituality? Some of them that I think aren't probably have that tied into in some way. He's come up with some clever, creative ways to say things about it before without making it sound repetitive, so he could probably do it again.
Perhaps the band could be playing these songs to throw us off..? If I was the frontman of a band, I'd probably do the same thing. Play songs that aren't going to make the album and/or have a different style so I can shock the fans. Right now I'm kind of expecting Healthy II (hopefully I'm wrong), but wouldn't it be a great swerve to actually have a throw-back to Naveed? Not only would we enjoy the music, but we would be much more appreciative for it, knowing would else could have happened with it. I doubt this will happen, but just throwing the idea out there.

I don't think they're bad enough that THAT's what could be happening. I wouldn't even say they're "bad". My qualms are still just really with the chorus lyrics to "The Right Stuff"... ok, and the song title, too, obviously.

I wouldn't be too surprised if those (or any of these new) lyrics weren't set in stone yet, though.
Do we have any examples of old songs that were played live first and the lyrics totally changed before going on an album? I'm sure there must be some. The only thing I can think of right now is how the "Walking In Circles" riff totally changed.

I just watched Not Afraid at the Juno's again, and the verses are mostly rhyming nonsense.
Besides, I really like The Right Stuff, its catchy, its a harder rock song than what they have been doing. Its like the opposite of what HIPT was to me. It's not melodic and sweet, and it wasn't emo like gravity. Great.
Even White Flags seemed more modern than what HIPT was.

Very good point. I guess their music is maturing/changing and we just have to go along with it. it's still great music. The more I listen to White Flag, the more I like it.
Most of all, we should just be happy OLP is still together and making music. They could have easily broken up during HIPT, and I mean, how many 90s bands are actually still together now? Barely any. OLP has survived, and I'm more than pumped to hear anything they give us.

"NOT AFRAID"! I knew there was one! Gosh, remember the excitement when they played that? Aww. The whole OLP community came out of the woodwork.
Anyway, on topic. Really don't wanna get into the Arnold Lanni argument again. It's pointless trying to figure out who/why things changed. They just did.
