No, I don't think that's the reason they put it there. I think they put it there because they assumed I broke the law on a regular basis. And yes, that does offend me...especially when I just shelled out 300 bucks for the iPod.
Do you feel offended when you read a mattress tag and it says removal of the tag is considered a federal offense?
How about when you're taking pills. Do you get offended when it says that by taking half the bottle it could result in death?
Or how about if you buy a paper at a newspaper box and on the box it asks you to only take one. Are you offended that they would put that on there?
I sure as hell hope the answer to all of those was no... and that as well should apply to your problem as well...
In my opinion they're just saving their asses from being sued. If you don't like it then take it back to the store and buy something else. I doubt Apple will miss your $300 all that much. By the way, it is their product and therefore they can put absolutely anything they want on it. It was your choice to purchase it.

To be offended by it because you're a part of probably 1% of people (actually I'm pretty sure it's way under 1%) who doesn't steal music is just plain silly. They know their customers and can't cater to the extreme minority's feelings.
