Rufus Wainwright wrote:Alright, now that I've seen what kind of music you listen to, please tell me what gives you the right to be so condescending about the music I like. I'm dying to know how you earned the supreme right to say everything I listen to sounds the same when half of the stuff you listen to is run-of-the-mill rock music.

Thanks.

first of all, i'm not so sure that you've heard music by a third of the musicians listed which would invalidate your run-of-the-mill comment by default. second, i'm not trying to be condescending, i'm trying to be objective and i made an observation. it just sounds like most of the "emo" bands i've heard songs by sound like they have a singer with the same vocal timbre. it could just be the singing style or it could actually be coincidence. by the same token, it could also be that groups led by these types of singers are what the consumer population is receptive of during this particular musical era. i honestly don't know where you're coming from with all the self-righteous hostility directed at me...hell, i'm even politically correct enough to use "emo" in quotes.

Alright Steph. I'm going to bold all the bands on your list that I own cds of, then we can figure out if it's at least 1/3 or not.

radiohead, jeff buckley, our lady peace, silverchair, muse, tori amos, ben folds, claude debussy, dave matthews, eric whitacre, a perfect circle, frederic chopin, the beatles, coldplay, miles davis, maurice ravel, the flaming lips, garbage, matthew good, incubus, jump little children, sarah mclachlan, oasis, pink floyd, ours, RHCP, godspeed you black emperor!, rufus wainwright, samuel barber, chantal kreviazuk, dar williams, john coltrane, morton lauridsen, franz schubert, depeche mode

Those are just the bands that I own albums of.

I'm going to give you a list of my favorite bands now. I want you to bold the ones you've even heard.

Alkaline Trio, Our Lady Peace, Koufax, Kind Of Like Spitting, NoFX, The Lawrence Arms, The Blood Brothers, The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, Rufus Wainwright, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Thursday, Brand New, Hot Rod Circuit, Bright Eyes, Braid, Fugazi, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The New York Dolls, Elliott, Reggie And The Full Effect, From Autumn To Ashes, Murder By Death, The Dirtbombs, The Von Bondies, The Sights, Minor Threat, Flaming Lips

OK, you get the point. I'd like to see how many bands I like you've even heard so I can see how you have some sort of right to say that everything I listen to is just the same thing.

This is fun.

forgive me, a quarter

for the record, you proved nothing by listing the bands you like because i never said anything about the bands that you listen to. i specifically referred to "bands that i've heard songs by that are described as 'emo'". whether or not i've heard anything by any of the bands you listen to is completely irrelevant and frankly i'm confused as to what your point was in posting them in the first place. i also love how you just assume that i even make mention of you when referring to emo

Honestly, at first, I was pissed because I know you would insult my music to me back in the day, then I just wanted to have fun with this. You killed the fun. Fun killer.

Yeah, this thread is beyond you now buddy.

Honestly, if you're worried about the stereotype that comes with the music you think you're into, then you're not into the music. The music should be more important than the black-rimmed glasses image. You don't cry in your room by yourself and you don't write shitty teenage poetry, so you're fine.

Now if you started wearing Dashboard Confessional shirts over a collared shirt, too tight of jeans, the glasses and acting stupid for attention, I'd clearly kick your ass at a concert.

I proudly wear my Dashboard shirt. My glasses are kind of thick rimmed...and my jeans are tight cause that's the way girls' jeans are. I am clearly emo.

Shut up.

When I speak of the stereotype, I am talking about those boys that go too far. Their jeans are disgustingly tight to where you would see their bulge if their package wasn't cut off, their hair is black, they have the emo hot topic glasses, their sweatervest and shirt leaves them with a midriff, and they act like they're better than everyone.

They should die.

You know what, I have to agree with you there.

People take these images far too serious and then they become egotistical bastards. I hate them all.

Possibly more then the wiggers.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Yeah, actually, they do. I was there yesterday because my friend wanted to purchase a Social Distortion hoodie and there was a rack of them. Ask Stephanie, they were there and she had me put a pair on for her once. They exist buddy.
