and to whomever said that the F major barre chord was the easiest barre chord, i can play a lot of chords easier than that one, its definetly not the easiest barre, at least for me...my fingers go in weird directions...try Bm

this is also one of the most popular barre formations, so if you learn that one, you'll learn a lot of barre chords

another suggestion would be to buy a book or two on theory and/or guitar basics especially if you plan on forming a band sooner or later. i think its kinda weird when i see semi-experienced guitar players who don't have a clue as to what chord they're playing. you'll also need it when you read or write music (beyond tab)

LOL. That's a problem I have now. I can play my own stuff, but I dunno how to write it down besides putting standard notation above chord names and strumming pattern at the top. That all takes way too long when ur playing it as it plays in ur head, and trying to write it down;.

^ yeah, but considering you should really kno what ur doing if u want to read or write music. I like playing and screwing around too, but u can't always do that if ur playing something structured

i'm very much capable of playing the kind of music that i want to play. i will continue to grow as a guitar player and my music will grow with me. but i'm happy with the talent i have and for the first time ever, i am feel confident holding my instrument. and i have no idea how to play a seventh chord. oh well.

the musicians whom i admire most are the ones who learn the rules and then break them. i also don't know too many professional musicians who don't know how to write their music down on paper (as in sheet music, not TAB)

there is so much out there for you to learn and use to your advantage...if you're just fucking around that's fine but if not then why not do everything you can to reach your full potential?

Well, here's how I spent my time with the guitar. I spent oodles of time learning different chords, what they're called, and how to play them. In a week I forgot all their names and found myself using tabs again. That's just easier for me to work with. I find it to be more fun to just jam out on my guitar instead of learning the names of each barre chord. I guess that's just me.

i'll go back to this again and again. read the alternative press article about alkaline trio. matt skiba does not even know where a c chord is located on the fret board. and look where it got him. that is admirable. it's like the scrawny kid who hits a home run. he doesn't work out everday, he just plays his heart out.

Now let's stop and think about this. What seems more difficult. Playing power chords or being a pussy and playing in drop D or open G tuning so you hold down two strings to sound like you're playing a barre chord? If you're going to call yourself a technical guitarist, then play the guitar the way it's meant to be. Tuning it some odd way just to make a different sound doesn't make you a good guitarist, it just makes you a pussy.

I'll leave you with this. You people here idolize Steve and Mike Turner, both who use the drop D tuning. Well, Chris Carabba from Dashboard Confessional does the same thing, except he plays faster than Mike Or Steve. So does that make Chris better? There's nothing difficult about taking the half-assed way out to play the guitar. I'd rather be honest and play what I can easily (power chords) than tune my guitar and fake it.

I never said that. I just disagree with the belief that it's not imp to have any background music knowledge incorperated in ur playing. I sure as hell never said the kid can't play.
