Why do YOU think the world is going to hell?
No, she's saying PEOPLE who don't believe in God, not God him/her/itself. As a person who doesn't believe in god, I take offense.
If she had said "Muslims" or "Jews", or really, any other minority, we would all have been disgusted. But atheists, hey, they don't count, we can single them out, right?
It's sickening. I'm not intolerant of her, I'm intolerant of her attitude. It's attitudes like that that keep humanity hating and killing each other.

I don't believe in God and I didn't take offense to that. I suppose I just took the comment a different way than you did. Your anger is understood. Sorry for callin ya out there.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I don't think she blamed atheists, she expressed a common religious view: if everyone did believe in God and followed one code of religious ethics or another, people probably would tend to get along better, but unfortunately that's a totalitarian ethic. people are different, so people won't get along. I think that's what she meant. but I don't think she was being intolerant, was she?

Not true. Ever read the Bible? Eye for an eye? Stoning people for the tiniest offense? I don't think the world would be a better place if we all followed those ideals. Ever see godhatesfags.com or godhatesamerica.com ? Those people follow a very strict code of religious ethics, but could you imagine what kind of horrible place the world would be if they ran things?
Despite that, atheists tend to be very moral people, because we feel like we have to prove ourselves to those who think you can only be a good person if you believe in god.
Maybe I overreacted, but I'm sick and tired of hearing that the world would be a better place if people like me didn't exist.

I understand. I hope you didn't take my comment as attacking you personally. It's just that all I ever see on the news these days is episodes of hatred and violence, all based on intolerance. It's this idea that, if everyone were just more like US, the world would be better, and if they aren't sufficiently like US, well, we'll just kill them, or assimilate them, or alienate them.
I hate the us vs. them mentality. I hate that people are always seeking to draw lines between people: WE'RE straight, THEY'RE gay, WE'RE Christian, THEY'RE Muslim, WE'RE American, THEY'RE not. And then, ideas are built upon these distinction that WE are somehow better than THEY, that we are somehow more human than anyone else, and that justifies treating them as subhumans.
It makes me sick. Why can't we all just get along?

I agree with you totally. I know people who will say that it is a betrayal of their beliefs to not stand up for them, but I personally think you can have your beliefs and voice them, but you can not take away another person's freedom to choose.

plus if you truly have faith then you don't need to argue with other people about it, if you are maybe that means your secretly doubting.........or you think your better then others which is in direct conflict with most religons
man, why can't we all just be Budhist? Serioulsy they respect other religons and how many ties do you hear about rebel budhist forces making terrorist attacks?

There should be a thread on alienation. Someone start one, I am far too lazy. Feel free to keep posting why you think the world is going down the shitter.
Haven't posted mine yet, so here goes!
1. Government
2. Intolerance
3. Technology
4. Media (not all but some)
5. Just plain old society. Society sucks.

And didn't Jesus say that you should only pray in privacy, that religion was a private matter? I don't understand why people need to be so intrusive and public about their religion. I'm not saying people should hide what they believe, but I don't understand why some people make such a big deal about things like mandatory prayer in public schools, for example. Why aren't they satisfied with praying for themselves? Why do they want to force others to do it, too?
