wow, I can't even begin to tell you how much I love Raine's voice..*shudders of happiness* I love it when Raine does little voice things in songs, which were probably not supposed to be there. I'll quote the movie 'Almost Famous'
"To love rock and roll is to love what wasn't supposed to be there" or something like that. Great movie, I recommend it to everyone. With Raine, he does a lot of little crazy voice things :freak: (especially in the entire Naveed CD)...in the beginning of "Starseed" and in the middle of "Julia" he does this things where he goes:

mmmmMMMMMMBA!

^^my favorite
"You've got to keep it pure. You enter as a musician and if you're not careful, you end up as an entertainer." -Raine Maida

i think raines voice either makes or breaks the band to people, they either love it and can't stop listening, or are digusted and can only hear it as nasal whines.

^I disagree; for me, Raine's voice was an added bonus to the depth in lyrics, and total sound. I was blown away by Mike though, Steve must rock me out well with an old Naveed track to prove his worth. Our Lady Peace on the 9th and I should have my minidisc recorder in time

I first heard OLP when I bought the 'Clumsy' album...I had never even heard of them...but I was being spontanious I gues...the first thing I noticed when I heard Raine's voice wasthat it was so odd and remarkable. It was diffrent from anything I had ever heard before and it just made me want to laugh  because it was so unusual and cry  because it was so beautiful. It is one of the main reasons that OLP is my favorite band ever.

I think my absolute favorite "Raine-Voice-Moments" were during 'The Beautiful Future' and 'Naveed'. What attracts me to 'TBF' is how desperate and weird his voice is. The corus is gorgeous and the beginning "She build her own satalite..." is just amazing.

But my all time favorite moment is in 'Naveed' when he repeats "Is gone..." 16 times. Most people <i.e. my freinds and family> think it is repetative and annoying, but to me, it is the one part of a song, any song, that makes me feel such strong emotions...the way that it starts quiet and slow and slowly becomes more and more aggresive, more and more desperate...God it is a moment of sheer bliss.

OK...theres my two cents....

You mean The Wonderful Future
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I know this is a horrible thing to say and I don't agree, but I have to tell you thiu since this is a thread about Raine's voice. I am friendly with one of the DJ's here in the city(NY). I told them it is nice to see OLP finally getting some play here. I asked if they could play other tracks. They told me that they have to release Singles for the station to play it. I said something along the lines like Oh yeah you don't like OLP.

he said why do you think that. I love the new CD. It is in my cd player, etc. They said they like this cd better then the other ones because:

It doesn't sound like Raine has a stick up his ass anymore.

Oh my. that is funny. But i know what they mean. A bunch of people have asked me how I can tolerate Raine's voice. I never noticed the things they talk about. it is just OLP to me. I can't see anyone else singing those songs any different then Raine. he is unique.

nah...he doesn't sound like he has a stick up his ass. i think that would sound much more painful. i love olp's older albums because of the uniqueness in raine's voice. i love the falsetto, the range, the nasalness. frankly, as much as i like th songs on gravity i wish that there was a little more of raine's older style voice on there. it's part of the olp vibe, and one of the reasons i started to like the band to begin with. they're different, and i hope they continue to be that way.

oops! Sorry about the "The Wonderful Future" mix up...I haven't slept in days and it was also 3 am when I posted! Don't you hate making stupid mistakes when your trying to make a serious point!?! Hope there are no hard feelings! OLP really is my favorite  band...I have just always been more into listening to the music than remembering the titles! I think I might have confused the title with the lyrics lastnight...ya know the part that says "Shes beautiful..."...My apologies!

I might be the exception that proves the rule about the voice.

The one time I have the band live on tape, he sounds nasal and whiny. On the albums (I have them all except Happiness...) I love his voice. Except for Superman's Dead, so far, at which point I want to kill him (Superman, not Raine)...
