It's a tremendously tough issue to tackle. :(

The human population, at its current rate of reproduction (an average of something like 3 children per pair of parents) will double in size by around 2050, within our lifetimes. 12 billion people on Earth. Food, energy, work, shelter, every single one of these people is going to need these things, and with such high affluence in developed countries being mimicked and demanded by developing countries, the strain on resources is going to grow both by population and by individual. More people demanding more for themselves. :\

And who's to say that they can't demand such things? How can we morally tell people not to have the family they desire? This is a well nigh-impossible task in our own culture - trying to do so across cultural boundaries is even harder.

Overpopulation has consumed me for about nine months now, but I can't honestly see any enforcable solution. It's deeply distressing. :freak:

Hopfully once other countries begin to cath up to us economically they will also adopt our ideas of smaller families. Not that this will solve the problem, but it will slow down the effects. Plus in some countries such as China, because of the family limit laws, there are many more men in China then women, which should again, limit births.

The probability of having large families decreases drastically and in clear correlation with education. Decreasing general ignorance specifically in the area of global development would have a decided impact on the issue. There is no 100% fix, but I think this is the best possible thing that can be done.

I disagree with that. If you look it up, Utah has the highest youth rate in the United States. It also has one of the highest higher levels of education rates.

I'd say, in general, that quote is probably accurate. Education isn't the only factor, though. Utah would be an exception. :P

it's quite a phenomenon how wealthy countries populations are actually leveling off, and yet poorer countries are rapidly increasing.

what i see happeneing eventually is that the labor pool in the states and other rich countries will shrink dramatically and will force companies to go to the poorer countries and pay better for services rendered. that and of course a great migration to the rich countries to fill voids in the labor market.

this is a reason why i see the southern migration into this country as a good thing.

nobody's gonna come up with some super-fix for overpopulation. We'll just keep going until there's another plague or we nuke the hell out of each other. Should be interesting.

It'll take less than six months for our current population to replace those lost in all the wars, plagues, famines, and disasters that occurred in the last century. :\
