@Kicker I dont know why you are surprised by this? most Canadian bands release their albums in Canada a couple weeks before the states.

I'm anything but surprised. I've just become apathetic to the whole dog and pony show by now.
Just wake me when I can go out on a lazy afternoon and buy the album.

Gravity, HIPT, and Burn Burn came out on the same day but everything else has come out later in the US. Clumsy and SM were delayed about 3 months, Naveed and the live DVD didn't come out in the US for a year. And those all had massive record companies behind them keeping the wheels turning... I was actually very surprised when they managed to get Burn Burn out without delays in the US. Well, I don't think I saw it in any stores personally but I think Amazon had it on time.

It's pretty typical, the demand, the distribution logistics, and various other factors in different countries can lead to different release dates. Not sure how this is anything to do with OLP, this happens all over the place.

From what I've heard the pre-orders are all being shipped based on the Canadian release date, and I'm sure you can find some way to hear the album while waiting for it to be released locally.

Do I still like wolf? fuck yeah its a great song too - but the album is not just about one song, it's an album and I gotta say its nice to finally listen to entire record front to back again...this thing has been on repeat for the last couple days and I gotta say with every listen it grows on me more and more - in my opinion it is brilliant, I am hearing things I have not heard in music in a VERY long time....so long that on first listen some of it was foreign to my ears - once you drop any pre-conceived notions or expectations you have formed based on some demo clips and a couple live performances and just listen, well yeah, if you arent pleasantly surprised and even fucking floored by the things happening on this record then there is a very good chance you might be dead :)

Ok, so you've had some time to process the material and let it sink in. Early favorites? And is there a stand out rocker? Is there a chance this could be their best album for you personally?

According to everyone in the band and those around them, every single album has been the best one yet. ;)

Yea I know it's just a different release date. It's just the same thing over and over again.
There's no use getting excited and looking forward to an OLP album coming out. You know it's just going to get delayed or pushed back or witheld for one reason or another.

huh? it's not a delay, that just the release date for the USA - so yeah, now you have nothing to not get excited about :)

I never said this was the best and I don't think anyone has ever said that , I have heard "its our best" before - and if a band isnt making thier best record each time, well then should they even be a band anymore? Continually putting out YOUR best just proves that you are evolving at your craft and is usually the driving force behind any artist or creative endeavour. Now, as for what YOUR best and THE best are? - well that's subjective and quite frankly one of the lamest things to argue about - different strokes for different folks :)

I like the record and have had a chance to really absorb it - and i still keep hearing new things after 10 full listens -and i dont skip over any tracks which is a pretty foreign concept to me these day haha.

I will admit I am also biased because i was there for a good part of it being made, so its cool to hear all those parts come together and the finished product - you guys got to hear a lot of the same stuff i did via those youtube studio clips - so i am sure you will have some similar experiences when you first hear it.

as for stand out tracks right now

What he said. I was bummed about some of the cut tracks, a one of them was spaced to be completely falsetto.

if i'm not wrong "Rabbits" should be entirely in falsetto! I remember a Raine's Tweet where he told that....but the song was "Like Rabbits We Run" i don't know if this is the same song! :D

RileyLewis wrote:"And Gravity, HIPT, and Burn, Burn were what we got."

I'm not sure where you got your information from, but I think it's incorrect. Burn Burn was a more "live off the floor" album, but the previous two couldn't be further from that. With HIPT in particular, they ended up recording 34 songs, I think, and spent weeks at a time going over the tracks and re-doing things and remixing (check the videos on youtube for proof). It nearly broke the band apart.

However, the initial recording sessions for HIPT were "live off the floor," and the band thought they had a finished album. Then they went back and re-recorded and wrote more. None of the tracks on that album are particularly deep or musically layered. They are more simple and straightforwardly written songs (even though I'd admit they were overworked, albeit NOT overproduced). As for Gravity, there were several songs off that album that were done in only 2-3 takes, live off the floor. The band has admitted that the final version of "Bring Back the Sun" is basically a demo for which the lyrics weren't even finished yet, hence the muttering on a few lines. All that said, I don't hate Burn Burn, HIPT, or Gravity in the least. I just think that those albums turned OLP from a weird and sonic band with its own sound to a predictable and almost plain type of alternative rock act.

Seriously, if it wasn't for Raine's voice, you'd never know that the same band who recorded "The Wonderful Future" also recorded "Boy" or "All You Did...".

Also I think you're confusing two different issues with "over-producing." On the one hand you have Sporitual Machines. It wasn't over-produced, it had many many layers and tracks, but each individual track sounded really raw or edgy. With Burn Burn or Healthy the tracks were more simple but they sounded very clean and polished. I think many people prefer the slightly rougher feel of Naveed-SM (and to an extent Gravity). I'm not saying one is better than the other, just that there is a difference.

I think I was unclear with what I meant by over-produced. Notice that I put it in quotes (at least, I'm thinking I did) in my original post. Back in 99-2000, many people criticized OLP for "overproducing" their albums, particularly Happiness. IMO, those people were confusing complicated song structuring and experimental music with "overproducing." Almost at the same time, OLP was experimenting with studio layering in ways that Wilco was also doing with "Summerteeth" and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." They both got attacked for it. Wilco got kicked off their label because they refused to change, while OLP, on some level, folded to the pressures of the record company and took on a more mainstream approach to their overall sound. I'm not really suggesting that they didn't mess with "raw" vs. "polished" or "live tracks" vs. "studio layering." It's the overall sound that changed from odd and eccentric to predictable and straightforward (and sometimes live off the floor). I've stayed a loyal fan throughout, always hitting up the shows whenever they come through Chicago, but I'm very happy to hear that "overproduced" weirdness and individuality sneaking its way back into their music.

I ordered SM through Amazon.ca or something way back then, and I got it on the Canadian release date in Illinois. So I'd think it would be shipped to the U.S. on/around the 3rd if preordered through a Canadian site.

Pretty sure it was Tales from a Grocery List he said was almost entirely falsetto.

the only reason I pre-ordered it was to get the bundle., I think I get single download and download of cd, plus hardcd..

anyway there are no more stores here to buy cd's. Only a Best Buy and they rarely carry OLP.. I was going to get it at show anyway( side not to Trusty that was the Bundle I was talking about. Note at NYC show sale that when you bought ticket got cd, and other things with purchase.. Seems it is the same stuff coming in Box Set almost)

It is odd cause the cd does not come out here to end of tour almost. Will they still sell it at show? That is where I have been buying my cd's now. That is Starbucks. Just got Springsteen and Leonard Cohen and my Starbucks.

I also have to say why is it seems the same few people complain over and over about the same things everytime a new cd comes out? I only stated that I saw cd comes out a little later in USA and wanted to know will I get the cd before then.. 2 weeks not a big deal. It is more for my post office then anything else. Stuff gets lost so I need to track things so I know to look for it.
