on another note...i really like a boy but i dont know what to do because

A) i'm socially inept and bound to screw up

B) he's one of my best friends, and i dont want to fuck with that

C) he's in love with another girl, but doesnt have a chance with her, and is depressed because he thinks he's everyone's second choice. he complains that he's every girl's buddy and no one is romantically inclined towards him...i am dammit, but i think he sees me as the buddy and the confidant, because he tells all his girl troubles to me.

i don't know what to do dammit!

he asked me today who i liked...i was just like...a guy from work and some other guy. i'm sure it would have been a perfect opening if i weren't too chicken to have just said 'you.'

blah. i shouldnt be so mopey.

Well if you really like him you should give it a shot. Just mention it too him, if you're friends already then saying that shouldn't cause any problems. Sometimes people don't even see someone in that way until something happens (like said person saying they like them) then they see you the way you see them. His asking who you like and mentioning he's always second choice could have been him dropping hints that he might be interested in a relationship with you. I'd say just try and tell him how you feel or try and ask if he would ever date anyone other than that other girl. I know how you feel though, if only I had the guts to ask the girl I like out.
