The short answer is, pretty much nothing the way they look, because Greek has a different alphabet and it doesn't translate well into english

well cept the ones that have non-english sounds in them
plus athens is pronounced ah-THEE-na
with a soft "th" like in "think"

nope.. that's medusa..
athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. she's got a cool helmet and shield and spear and shit
she's awesome
they named the city after her so that she'd protect them and make them smart
guess it worked!
