Metallica Fans vs. Bob Rock
i don't really consider In Repair to be a rock song, maybe a borderline soft rock song
"How can we justify spending so much on destruction and so little on life?" Matthew Good
"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911
"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good
I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.
"Hold on, hold on children, your mother and father are leaving, hold on, hold on children your best freind's parents are leaving, leaving,.......*AHHH*! " - Death From Above - Black History Month

Yeah, I'd say that One Man Army was their last rock single too. Which is sort of intersting.... I never realized that before. And yet they are still concidered a rock band. Then again, so is Train.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

I AM ME wrote:They are already out to the masses in Canada. The reason they started to loose them is because of the drastic changes they were making around happiness era. Not to say they shouldn't have, it is definatly a must. But right now in Canada there's a lot going on in the rock scene, and people are accepting of original stuff that before the masses might not have dug. I think they didn't need to simplifiy anything to continue in Canada, they just needed a revitalization. Gravity was a quick boost to OLP's career in Canada, but ultimatly i think it may have been destructive to there future sucess, because the fans they won over with Gravity, to be honest probably don't have as much intrest in old olp, nor new olp if they change again.
OLP are not an unknown band that need to break out. They're a band that needs to come out with something new and musically superior to bring back the old fans and make new long-time ones. Because to be honest there's a lot of people that would love OLP but they're turned off by it's continuing "generic", "SWOT" image, and don't see the other things going on, they do't take them seriously anymore. OLP is stuck in a musical limbo. They just can't pull off the commerical and pop success that some other bands can, but they also arn't groudbreaking or intelectual enough anymore to draw on the more hard-core (elitist asshole...Ex Me) crowd. So they're stuck depending on odd hit singles for life support.
Anyways, this is all assuming that simplifing has been their choice, maybe it is just a natural progression, which you can't blame them for. They're still one of the better bands in North America, and the world...they're just not a contender for best anymore.
Anyways these are just my thoughts, don't take this as an attack i'm actually holding out hope, and looking forward to the new album, maybe they're even take a risk witha single like they used to which is whatthey need to do i think, the worst that could happen is it could flop like "Made of Steal" did, and they can just release a safe one after.
I know OLP are HUGE in Canada..They do not have the same success in teh USA.. that is what I mean get out to the masses.. Clumsy was a huge cd for them but only on the alternative scence.. Somewhere Out there was huge all over.. modern/alt rock, rock, pop. adult com, and top 40.. I don;t think any other OLP song did that.. and although they released 1-2 more singles off that CD, only SWOt was the huge hit..I never even heard the other songs on teh radio where I live...
OLP have always appealed to people thru word of mouth. I remember when SM came out and going to the shows. People know all the song and the cd ws barely out, any song had the crowd singing. that was the cd that should of beeen big for them here but wasnt'.
it is so hard for any band to be big now and long lasting. let's be real how many bands who are huge now have long term appeal. thisis on problem I feel th industry has.. want aqcik fix-so not willing to take the time to develope an artist.. that is what is sad to me..
getting off topic there.. I was just saying that BOB is very commerical, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.. Personally in OLP's case I think SM was their best cd..
I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

I love both of those albums. What has really made me appreciate Naveed more is watching all this video of performances from when the band first started. That was some awesome stuff. The New Year's Eve performances, as well as the Molson Amphitheatre shows are fantastic. Just as a regular 4 piece band they were awesome. Even with an ape for a bass player.
I like how it took less than one page to make this not about Metallica and Bob Rock, to about OLP.

Definately agree about the Naveed-era live shows. Damn. That's the good shit. Denied, Hope...
Seriously, though. If you only download one video, download the Molson Amphitheater (1995-08-19) performance of Denied. Fucking aweomse.
Then (if you want to die a little inside) watch some of the DVD show.

I think myself along with many others on here are willing to wait and see what this next record sounds like. However, I believe that Jeremy as well as the others members are well aware of our complaints over Gravity.
You know if you look at the way Metallica produced their last album, it wasn't something that was all "pop"ish. I mean yeah "st. anger" is still a load of crap, but it wasn't written to get all these mainstream radio listeners to buy it. The songs were still written by Metallica, and regardless who produces your record, if the songs just aren't good, then they're just not good. I mean you can mold a pile of crap in many differen't shapes, but at the end of the day, it's still a peice of crap right?

Naveed has alwys been my favorite OLP cd... I love SM also.. I always thought that the songs off Naveed were always amazing live.. Look how Birdman sounds live over the years, Starseed, Naveed... I have yet to see any song off this cd done bad..
I give anything for them to bring Supersatelite or Dirty Walls back to the set. I know asking for Hope, Denied or Under Zenith is pushing it. Actually I don;t think they have done Denied or Under Zentih since 95.. Th elast time Hope was done live was at teh Montreal Club Show. That was funny.. Raine was telling this whole story about Jeff Buckley.. Mike looks at him and then Raine goes this is HOPE.. Then they did Eternal Flame.. I love the longer version of Hope when they do the ... She's not there..etc.. WOW. I have that on Big tiCket.. Mike was so amazing on that performance...
LOL..> I love how you guys still call Chris an APe. All kidding aside. Chris did come up with some brilliant bass lines that Duncan perfected over the years..
okay now back to Bob and Metallica.. I actually own alotof things BOB worked on .He was an enginer before producer and a Bass player before that. he was in teh band the PAYOLAS..
I have to say I like Metallicas earlier stuff, but I love the black album..
