I didn't see nearly enough concerts this past year, but the few I saw were all really good.
I've got two favorites...
Metallica - 2004-10-19 - Wachovia Center - Philadelphia, PA, USA
I've always liked Metallica, but seeing them live just put them way higher on my list of bands. People might not like them very much, but they definitely put on a good show... especially considering the massive audiences they play to. Usually at shows this large, I leave feeling like I hadn't even been to a concert... not the case with Metallica. Awesome.
Jason Mraz - 2004-03-03 - World Cafe, Indre Studios - Philadelphia, PA, USA
Un. Freaking. Believable. Me and Melissa got there really early, so we sat (yes, sat... in a comfy couch I might add) front row. This was a syndicated radio show recording, so it was a different experience, to say the least. Jason played something like 6 or 7 songs, and did long interview segments in between. That boy can SING like you wouldn't believe... if you've heard his album, it doesn't even begin to do justice for his voice. And he's freaking funny on top of it. I went there barely knowing his songs (Melissa had won the tickets two days before so I scrambelled to download the album and try to get to know the songs) and came out a fan.
And these two (the only others I went to) are honorable mentions...
Maroon 5 - 2004-04-30 - College Union Ballroom, Gettysburg College - Gettsyburg, PA, USA
Great show, but the teenyboppers definitely subtract from the awesome factor. The annoying chatter in line then screaming in concert is enough to make a person want to blow up the entire planet. The band's ACDC cover was awesome to see in person, though. In conclusion, love love LOVE the band, HATE their fans. Oh yeah, also, this was the absolute loudest concert I've ever been to. Mostly because we were standing right in front of the speakers on the right side of the stage, but regardless I left with my ears ringing up a storm, and I couldn't hear anything.
Green Day - 2004-10-29 - The Liacouras Center, Temple University - Philadelphia, PA, USA
Green Day was beyond amazing as always. Still one of the best live bands I've seen. I felt really old at this concert, though... something that's never happened to me at a GD show before. Regardless, was a good time.
^ see what I did there with the colors? Eh? Eh???
God I'm a dork.

Without a doubt, the best show I attended this year was The Bad Plus. They were also my favorite live show of 02 and 03. It simply doesn't get any better than the performance they do! (although the 02 show was probably my favorite).
Probably my second favorite would have been the WXPN Singer/Songwriter show with Fountains of Wayne and Rachael Yamagata. They announced FoW first and I decided that I was going to go. Then, just a few minutes before tickets went on sale, the announced that Rachael was playing. That was such an awesome surprise since I am an even bigger fan of hers than of FoW!
My third favorite show would be Alanis Morissette. I was expecting her to be good, but nowhere near that good! Barenaked Ladies also played and, while some of the songs they played I enjoyed (mostly their older stuff) I wasn't all that impressed with them. Alanis more than made up for that though. Despite the fact that she didn't play a single song from either of my favorite of her albums (Under Rug Swept and Feast On Scraps) she was amazing!
Honorable mention...
Cake (second time I've seen them, and just as great as the first time!)
Cephas and Wiggins (at my college!)
Orgy (never thought I'd see them after they broke up or whatever it was that they did!)
Dashboard Confessional (good, but not like they used to be!)

Brutus is an honorable man
It's just coincidence that oil men will wage war in an oil rich land
And this one goes out to my man taking cover in the trenches with a gun in his hand
Then gets home and no one flinches when he can't feed his fam...
But Brutus is an honorable man...

That's funny, the Mraz radio show I chose as one of my favorites was WXPN, too.

blah
I only saw three shows in 2004
Definite #1 has to be Ron Sexsmith with Sarah Slean in De Helling, Utrecht. I only saw Ron Sexsmith for about a minute, watching through the window in the door, because I was only there for Sarah Slean. She was great, she has the best live voice I've ever heard and she stayed an hour after the show to chat to fans. Plus, she remembered my name!
#2 was Maroon5 at 013, Tilburg. I wasn't too sure about them because there were a lot of teenybopper fans. The concert was really good though, very energetic, and the fans weren't as bad as I expected (despite the one panty being thrown onstage
).
#3 was Saga, again in 013, Tilburg. They were kinda boring

Consider yourself lucky.
