It'd matter if the rumor gets spread among people he actually likes and respects, and it makes them not want anything to do with him anymore.
It also would matter if this chick's boyfriend is the vengeful type and wants to beat him up.
Clearing your name after someone starts a lie about you isn't revenge... it's clearing your name.

I agree with whoever said that you should hold back until you are (inevitably) confronted about it by someone. Then give 'em your all, buddy. That is a downright shitty thing she did and I have zero respect for girls who abuse the pity they can conjure by lying about something that serious. She is spitting in the face of every woman who has ever been truly abused.
