It really is. I hate being afraid people are gonna pre-judge me based on the fact that I'm American because of people like that.

My Personal Response:

Your piece regarding the marine was completely uncalled for. First off, the rules of war apply to actual war, just because one side doesn’t play fair doesn’t mean that all rules of engagement should be thrown out the window. In your eyes, these insurgents are animals, so by your standards our tactics in the American Revolution were animalistic as well. You’re willing to create your own rules or standards for this individual because he’s one of ours. As Americans who are currently exporting democracy to nations such as Iraq, we should hold ourselves and our troops accountable for their actions. It sets a positive precedent in the country that we are trying to help. Any individual who signs up for the armed forces runs the risk of getting hurt or killed while in combat, they should know damn well what it is they are signing up for. The armed forces are not financial aid programs for school. It is sad when a marine is killed in combat, especially in the current circumstances in this war. But am I a little harsh when I say he was asking for it when he signed up for it? It’s just like an Iraqi holding a gun in Iraq, he’s just asking for it as well. But a wounded man, what more would he ask for? One should ask himself why exactly we are still there when the original reasons for war have deteriorated. Lets be honest here, how much of a threat was Iraq? When you woke up on September the 12th, 2001, was Iraq one of your major concerns?

I’ll save the war debate for another article; right now my concern is your disregard for human life. No matter what your opinion on these fighters, they are still people. Who’s to say that everyone in Falluja is an ‘animal’? It’s humorous that you inserted that last paragraph into your angry rant, as if to say you somewhat acknowledge that there are innocent civilians in the city, but it was done so hastily that it proves to me that you just don’t give a damn. Basically you inserted that paragraph to save your own ass. The problem however, is that most people I show this article to don’t even make it to the last paragraph because they are so disgusted by the body of your ill-written piece. So while this situation reminds you of a Metallica album title, this horrid article reminds me and many others like me of Green Day’s new one, American Idiot. There’s a difference between being patriotic and following your leader, hand in hand, blindfolded. To justify bad behavior by denigrating those who are victimized by our troops is a sorry attempt on your part. How many others across the country think the way you do? Is it any wonder that the rest of the world considers Americans arrogant, stubborn, and idiotic? When actions like this spark outcry from the rest of the world, and get reactions from columnists like this one, it makes me wonder if their hatred toward us is somewhat justified.

But, I’ll thank my troops. Most of them are my age, the same guys I played football with/against, the same guys I went to high school with, the same guys that I used to drink beer with, brothers, sisters, family and friends. I thank them because they’re in situations that they don’t belong in. Iraq had no relevance until we actually went there. Not much different from you or me, only that I knew that the armed services were not a financial aid program. But one special thank you should go out to this young man who probably didn’t know what he was doing, or the trouble he would get into because of his actions. Thank you, you’ve solidified the world’s view of Americans as heartless individuals. Also, Thank you Derek Dickson, you’ve also proved to me that there are many like you that follow blindly and don’t question the integrity of our leaders and what they do. American Idiots, only asking questions will save us from our doom.
