i've done that lots! the most recent was when it cost $1.75 to go skating and i gave a toonie, three nickles and a dime to the lady and started walking away thinking i had given exact change. and i KNEW the price before i got up to the window too.

woo, i don't feel so bad now
i do that all the time .. when i was younger i HATED paying for anything and i'd make other people do it for me
i seriously think there's something wrong with the part of my brain that works with numbers

lol, i did the same thing because i felt like a fool paying for ANYTHING
the first day at work i worked the cash registar. it was hell
now i'm a bit better with it, and it helps that when i'm on cash it's never at the front so i never have to deal with insane line ups. i can take my time. but if a customer corrects me, or says i did something wrong, or finds change AFTER i've rung up the amount of change, i'm screwed

that's why i like people who pay with credit cards or debit best

i desperately need a job now but i'm still terrified of applying for any retail jobs because i have these images of HUGE line ups and me working the cash all flustered and confused

i mean the cash registers are supposed to be pretty basic in telling you how much change to give back .. but damn .. i'm scared

try and get a job on floor service instead of cash. that's what i do, i walk around helping customers and fielding phone calls. you know when you call zellers looking for something in electronics? i'd answer that. need help setting up the furniture you bought? i answer that too. need to find a toy that you have a vague description of but no idea what it's called? yup. you guessed it. i answer all those, and i only started product training yesterday.

because that's efficiency for ya! the up side...i know the store better than anyone else, even the managers, because i am the one who actually WILL go and search thoroughly for what a customer wants and not bs about it being on order.
and cash registers aren't bad once you learn em...but line ups are SCARY

i'd crack under the pressure of a line up and probably burst into tears and then curl up on the floor in the fetal position until they all went away

we had a new cashier do something similar to that

i missed it, but apparently there was a lineup and she was having a hard time dealing with the impatient people and she screamed and started repeatedly slamming her fingers in her cash drawer.
...okay, maybe it's not so funny. poor kid.

but now's definitely the time to get a job in retail because they'll be hiring their holiday staff...a good chance for you to test drive them and them to test drive you. if it works out you've got a foot in the door, and if it doesn't, you've got a few paycheques and no harm done
