Is he better than Mike Turner? If so, how? Better than RAge's guitarist or the Edge? I thought Jack seems to plod along with simple rythyms....never really caught me ear. I've heard he's a very good guitarist, but no one has really convinced me of what to look for that makes him great. And after hearing his voice maybe he should stick to guitar.

Meg's showcasing of old drumming is just flat out boring. I can play her beats in my head if I want to. I'm not saying it doesn't suit the music. it does in its simple way........its just not good........at all.

He is very good though, when I saw them live he did alot of riffs not in the songs. Its a different sound from them, than what you usually hear in rock these days.[mainstream anyways]

What makes Mike Turner better? His occasional pluck of the string? His completely boring demeanor? The fact that he played riffs that weren't that complicated? What is it? He can't do anything I can't, so does that make me as good as Mike Turner?

How about this Matt. We can have a conversation about drumming when you start playing the drums. Then we can really get into it when super-complex beats that defeat the purpose of the drums (to keep a rhythm) make you rich. When you become an international celebrity because you're amazing on the drums, I will take your arguments seriously.

Until then, I can't see your point. If all the band needs is a simple rhythm, then that's good for them. If a simplistic drum beat helps make you an international celebrity, well-to-do for life, and insanely popular, then why do something different?

Here's what I'm saying. Look at Jeremy Taggart back before Gravity. Listen to all those fills he played, listen to all the jazz influences, and listen to how technical each rhythm is used. Then think about how little success he had outside of Canada.

Then when he became the equivalent of a beginner on drums, look at the success the band gained. OLP finally had their first top 40 hit in America, received major airplay on the radio, and were on MTV the entire summer.

Think about it. People don't want to hear what is impossible to listen to. If they wanted that, they would listen to art rock or something like that.

Well, I at least am qualified to discuss drums. I'm under the impression that Clumsy had some amount of success in the US, and it also had some amazing and complex drum parts. I don't think it ever hurts to keep things interesting. I mean, wouldn't it be nice if Meg were a better drummer? Wouldn't it be nice if Jeremy stopped dumbing down his drumming?

it woudl be awesome is Jer stopped dumbing down his druming. But that's because that's who OLP are. The White Stripes werenever trying to be anything like that.

Now i get the impression that Raine wants olp to be a Canadian U2. Which great, but it's never been OLP's strong point, OLP were strongest when they were doing alternative music.

I like their newer stuff, Gravity, I really liked that album.

meh, i dont even count gravity as one of their albums.

Its obvios that Gravity is OLP's finest work

I heard the white stripes being played in HMV the other day. That was nice compared to most of the crap the other stores play.

Surfjan, don't associate how good someone is with popularity...if Meg played with OLP and Jeremy played with the Stripes, do you really think Meg could keep up (or would she increase their popularity??).......while jeremy would have no problem with any songs, and could probably help with some creativity.

Simplicity is some forms makes for excellent songs. The Beatles excelled at this. I'm not saying complication is always better. I never disagreed with this so don't make offhand assumptions.

And don't write off people's arguement because they don't play drums and aren't successful musicians. That's just a damn weak minded thing to say.
