In my chemistry class we had some question about how the philosphers stone couldn't be real. The answer was because you can't change somethings chemical makeup (Making objects into precious metals is impossible) But I wanted to rant about how its magic damnit. And that means it doesn't have to be possible to them muggles!!! But then I would have failed. But yeah. Why are people so keen on making magic things real?

Hmm my chem teacher told me it was possible. You just need an insane amount of energy to do it. Thus it would be completely impracticle because the cost of changing a metal to gold would far outweigh the value of the metal.
