Kaufman is famous for making up characters and posing as them. Kaufman seriously is the kind of guy who could hide away for 20 years because even before he went away people didnt often know if it was him.

Unless Andy Kaufman was really dying, and on his deathbed asked Zmuda to spread the rumour that he wasn't dead, and to have him somehow "return" each decade.
