you have no business claiming it as your own, but as for research and other non-violent and non-controlling that's fine. In fact i'm all for colonizing the moon, but lets do it right, we already fucked up this globe lets not do the same thing over again

With the government as it stands today, how can you guys say anything, its all so secretive, for all we know they've probably got a thriving city on the dark side :freak:

... and with the pic of Mr. Armstrong with the blowing flag on a moon that has no wind....

well I don't respect that one...

anyways back on topic...

How long do you guys think it will take till a serious effort is made to colonize outside of Earth?

I bet by the end of the century we'll have something at least on the Moon, and hopefully we'll have put a man on Mars, but right now it doesn't look like that's going to happen for a long while.

Why don't we have "no business on the moon"? If it was inhabited by other life I would agree with you but its not.

exactly my point, you can't just carve up a chunk of rock out in space and claim it as property of a government entity. and what the hell are you going to do on a base out there? what's so important about the moon that you would want for personal use?

The materials are there, or at least the vast majority of them. The moon has the same composition as the Earth. The only thing that I can think of that it lacks is decayed amimal matter (ie fossil fuels).

The idea about using the moon as a launching point for other missions sounds like a good idea to me. Of course, I'm a Physics and Astronomy major, not Polisci. The moon also provides us with a different perspective of the Earth. Research into things like the depletion(sp??) of the ozone layer could be carried out from the moon with rather good cost and time efficiency. Another thing that the moon provides is an excellent place to observe from. Near the poles there are places of eternal darkness quite close to places that recieve continuos light. So, you get continuous observing time with a continuous power supply (I'm thinking solar pannels here). A base on the moon is a great idea in my opinion as long as whatever government doesn't keep the research classified and under military control.
