Russian billionaire negotiating to buy Canucks: reports VANCOUVER (CP) - The president of the Vancouver Canucks has denied reports that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is negotiating to buy the NHL team. Despite the denial, reports on a possible NHL purchase by Abramovich were carried Thursday in several newspapers. Abramovich's net worth is estimated at $18.3 billion Cdn. He has rocked the soccer world in recent months by buying English Premier League soccer club Chelsea and spending more than 100 million pounds ($220 million Cdn) on star players. Seattle businessman John McCaw has been attempting to sell the Canucks for three years, and president Stan McCammon insists he prefers to find local investors. "John's thrust has always been that we would like to find local ownership because we think that works best for the franchise," he said. "Our position hasn't changed recently." But money talks, and Abramovich is loaded. He is selling his 50 per cent stake in Russia's biggest aluminum company to buy the Canucks, reports the Russian newspaper Vedomosti. Negotiations are being conducted with "senior figures" of the team, it says. Russian-born NHL players spending the summer in their homeland heard rumours of a possible purchase by Abramovich of an NHL team that would be stocked entirely with Russian players. Most of the millionaire players know Abramovich. Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman Viacheslav Fetisov, who now holds a government sport ministry position, is a friend and would have an interest in becoming involved in management of any team Abramovich might buy. "It wouldn't hurt to have our own, wholly Russian team in the National Hockey League," says Fetisov. "It would stir up more interest." Abramovich, 36, said to be Russia's second-richest man, already owns two sports franchises - Avangard Omsk of the Russian elite league, and Chelsea of England's premier soccer league. He's spending big to make both clubs winners. He's recently signed Oleg Tverdovsky, a defenceman with the Stanley Cup-champion New Jersey Devils last spring, to play for Omsk. He spent $313 million to purchase Chelsea last year and another $248 million signing international stars to turn that club into a powerhouse. "He is a boy who wants to enjoy himself," Moscow-based political analyst Sergei Markov told the London Evening Standard. "He's got all his money and now he has decided to buy a lot of toys." Abramovich, who has cashed in big on oil, avaiation and television properties besides aluminum, is said to have turned his sights to the Canucks after talks to buy the Dallas Stars failed. Russian authorities are investigating his business empire for any evidence of tax evasion, which is seen as a chief reason why Abramovich is divesting himself of financial interests in his homeland and spending most of his time in Britain. © The Canadian Press, 2003© The Canadian Press, 2003

That would be the most boring team in the whole league. They'd be quick, but they wouldn't touch each other. Boo.

tell that to dmitri yuskevich
that dudes a fuckin tank
he also hits... a lot
and isnt afraid to go down and block shots.. etc
hell don cherry endorsed him as being a "russian who plays the canadian way"

and thats a lot comin from grapes

as for the issue of a strike/lockout.. it'll be worth it if the teams and players can figure out how the hell to find a feasable manner in which to spend the money brought in.. i'd rather a year or 2 w/o the NHL then 2 or 3 competeing leagues which would further dilute the market

We've got the Brandon Wheat Kings (Go Wheaties!), who are actually good, and the Manitoba Moose. I've never been to a Moose game, maybe once the new arena is done.

There's nothing like the NHL though.

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks and the B.C. Lottery Corporation announced a marketing partnership Monday.

The first portion of the partnership revolves around Canucks scratch-and-win tickets.

A $10 ticket gives fans a chance to win a share of more than $2.2 million in cash prizes, plus road trip tickets and jerseys.

The second part of the deal involves a marketing program, including sports action lottery games whereby the NHL franchise would figure to collect 15 per cent of all wagering.

B.C. lottery projections say the agreement could deliver up to $2 million dollars to the Canucks.

In November of 2001, the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames struck a similar deal with the Alberta government.

oh and in response to that.. screw the moose.. the halifax mooseheads or the hamilton bulldogs need national coverage
more so the mooseheads :D

even tho half the team now plays for the cape breton screaming eagles this year.. btw..if you EVER wanna see the most fucked up rules and trades look no further than the QMJHL where its "legal" to trade your 5 best players to a team for 3 draft picks (all first rounders) and 2 crappy bit players and THEN at the draft trade those draft picks BACK to the SAME team for the players you just acquired with the incentive of getting the other teams best players in return on a "loan" basis for that year.

a few years ago when halifax hosted the memorial cup, they traded their best player brandon reid to some other team to acquire that teams best guy who was gonna be in the NHL the next year.. but the deal basically stated that reid wouldnt goto that team till after the mem cup.. while halifax would get the player for that year to play in the mem cup.. its like rent-a-player at its best

the mooseheads now need to find a way to get sydney crosby this way
btw.. sydney crosby = next gretzky (he was deemed that at the age of 15 and so far he's been lightin up the Q offensively at the age of 16) .. the hype is so huge that wayne actually called the kid up in cole harbour, NS (10 mins from where i used to live and grew up ) and talked to him about how to deal with all the hype and stuff
go fuck yourself.

mine starts tomorrow too :D
montreal plays :)

i think the habs are gonna be a lot better than most think this year
its all about the bigger D in front of jose.. souray's back, komisarek's startin the year in montreal, hainsey as well.. markov is big, quintal just doesnt give a fuck about size of himself or who he's hitting, rivet's a good sized player and finally theres brisebois and boullion who arent particularily big but have some average speed and in brisebois' case is "good" offensively .. but breezer beefed up apparently .. we shall see

im also lookin forward to seein the sens play
spezz is one of my picks for the hockey pool im in
my centers:
spezz, thorton, lecavalier and pavel datsyuk (i needed a cheap centre who'd put up numbers.. as a rule i hate the wings but i'd be fuckin nuts to not take a guy who has a guy named brett hull on his line)
go fuck yourself.
