I love this movie. It probably helps that I'm quite liberal myself, but still. I don't think it should really matter whether you are left or right wing, because the movie isn't really about guns, it's about the media and the culture of fear they are creating. It's about why Americans kill each other to such a higher degree than any other countries that have a lot of guns. I saw this movie in LA to a packed house and they gave it a standing ovation at the end.
I heard a few rumours that Moore was going to do his next film on 9/11 and the Bush administrations knowledge of certain things and the total failure of American intelligence. I think it will make a great film.
Bowling For Columbine
the whole speech:
Whoa. On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to -- they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much.
you see, the funny thing about liberals is even though there is irrefutable proof that Moore lied and skewed reality to make his point, you'll still focus on the one semi-truth that existed in the film and idolize him all the same.
the fact that he's a phony hasn't phased you at all. yet if a republican shot a documentary endorsing guns, you liberals would have his head if he so much as got a date wrong.
the double standard is shocking.

I don't consider myself a liberal? I just liked the movie...sorry man....
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

Funny, I always thought it was the other way around. I guess it depends which way you lean.

I don't really agree with your statement though. You are partially correct that if a Republican made a pro-gun documentary and made an error liberals would be all over him. The same is true vice versa, however. Michael Moore probably has zero Republicans who agree with him or support him. I don't really want to drag this into the conversation but it makes my best point. There is proof that George W. went to war with Iraq over false intelligence. Liberals are all over him about it, yet Republicans stand firm behind him in support. "The fact that he is phony hasn't phased you at all" yet if a Democrat did the same thing it would just be a reverse of the situation. In the end it isn't really about truths or half truths or lies, it's what you as an individual believes. I believe the media is stirring up fear where there should be little or none, I believe all guns should be banned, I believe Bush is not a good leader. Nothing is going to change my mind about these things, just as Moore isn't going to go against his beliefs. He has freedom of speech and is exercising it.

I agree, I think we're all less likely to pick on the little man, which really most people see Michael Moore as. He really seems like an average guy that everyone can relate to, making it much easier to side with him and take shots at other much larger corporations or Bush or whoever.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Man, you guys should have seen me while I was watching this movie. I have a bad habit of kinda putting in my own commentary when I watch a movie at home. Well, this was the first movie I had seen in theatres in weeks, so I guess I was outta practice in proper, uh 'public movie-viewing etiquete'. Every couple minutes I would yell at the screen and not realize how loud I was being until my friend that I came with kinda sneakily put his hand over my mouth.
Now, every time he sees me he says: "YOU CAN'T BUY GUNS AT WAL-MART!!" heh heh, guess I got kinda caught up in the movie
ANYway....
All media is construction of thoughts and ideas of the person or people that made it. If a production was completly rid of outside influences and views, it would have to be completley unedited and unbiased, which is impossible. I'm not defending him lying, but you have to take it for what it is.
I mean, its not REALLY a documenty, its just a man searching for answers about something, drawing from real events and some facts to find them. But think about it. Taking away from the whole idea of the movie, which I support, because a couple things were over-exagerated is pointless. The violence we are being fed by the media, society's addiction to fear, these are all important topics that need to be examined.
Wow, that made no sense and I already know how doug (or someone else) is going to rip it apart, wheeeeee.
