that movie was hillarious. it was possibly the most poorly made theatre movie ever... but it was well worth going to see just to laugh at it.
I've heard good things about the book though, and Luis Sachar is a really good author.

"catch-22" by joseph heller will keep you laughing for hours
if you want a pretty occupying book i'd go with "the fountainhead" by ayn rand(my favorite book) but its real long
also, "Ishmael" by daniel quinn is kickass once you get past the fact that he's talking to a gorilla

"The Age of Spiritual Machines" is a REALLY good book! When I first saw it I didn't really think that it would be, but it really was such a good book. I've read it twice. Oh, and George Orwell's "1984" and his book "Animal Farm" are both really good too. Those are the types of books you'd want to read if you're interested in crazy f##ked up endings. "1984" is sort of long, but "animal farm" is a really good short book and you'll really enjoy it! It's short and good and perfect!
Oh, and when did this book "Are we Spiritual Machines?" come out. I so have to get this book!

i would recommend
"Saying Yes" by jacob sullum. it is about doing drugs.
"Atlas Shrugged" by ayn rand. it is about what is right and what is not. it is very long.
"Treason" by ann coulter. it is very dumb. so dumb it's funny. ann coulter is the dumbest person in the world.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Get the five-in-one omnibus edition if you can. It's the best way to go about reading them.
Microserfs by Douglas Coupland. My personal pick for a good read.
Whale Music and Civlization, both by Paul Quarrington. To describe them in a word, I'll use "quirky".

Any of the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. There's about 40 of them.
The Science of Discworld by Terry Pratchett and two other guys whose names escape me.

Also..Watchers by Deen Koontz is good, but its very long and wordy, or Strangers by Dean Koontz
Or.. anything by Robin Cook..if you like fiction medical thrillers
