i love studying words and language, (hence my William Safire 'On Language' obsession), but i really don't think you need to use big words to sound smart. it's the idea you convey that really matters. nonetheless using "big words" definitely helps to get that A+ on a speech or report. simple people are wowed when they hear a speaker that can actually manipulate the english language properly, like it's some kind of talent. :roll:

but anyway, my favorite "big word" is actually very short.

"err" i love it.

"Oops, sorry, I've erred."

lol that's where i picked up the word too!! But Forgotton realms book and other fantasy make heavy use of it too
