i dont know about the independent rock thing because there are hundreds of bands that are anything from classical to jazz to bubble gum pop.

anyways, "emo" (emotional music) is usually used to describe music that is lamenting something, a lot of times love. usually it is acoustic and the lyrics take precedence over the actual music. it differs from other types of music that have the same lyrical theme in the way that "emo" tends to be more dramatic and visual. it has come to carry a certain style with it. for example: "gothic music" has a stereotypical tendency to center around death and in turn, some of its more dramatic listeners weave that into their lifestyle in the way that they dress, interact, percieve, etc. in the same way, "emo" has started to become (again, for its more dramatic listeners) a sort of lifestyle.

Wow, not to be a dick or anything, but Alkaline Trio defies everything you said about emo, and that is what people consider their music to be.
