I'm already thinkin Sony is in trouble........but I agree with the majority, they have GOT to sell the PS3 for about the same price as the competition, otherwise good-freakin-luck.
Although.....if there are schmucks willing to pay 700 bucks for it, why not do it?
That's gonna be rough though......a system that costs appx. 900 bucks per unit to manufacture, selling it for 400-500 bucks. Taking appx. a 400 buck loss! YIKES!

Also....
If the Blu-Ray on the PS3 works similarly in ANY sorta way to the Blu-Ray system that we currently use, at work.......it sucks! Shit stops working frequently, and for no reason. I'm sick of making corporate maintenance calls for it.

Right.......I'm satisfied with 360-ige.
I finally tracked down one, locally, for a buddy of mine last freakin night. Can't believe its expected to be May before they are in a more constant circulation.

Guess I could call ya hardcore....for dealing with it. haha!
I'm assuming you picked up a HD? Or not yet? I saw that my local KMart has 3 core systems in stock, as of yesterday........would've bought one to spike the price 'n put it on ebay, but not completly worth my effort right now. haha!

Joe Cooler wrote:Let us hope not. However, if Sony is going to compete with Microsoft then they will have to price the PS3 at $400. Therefore I suspect the PS3 will go for at least $500.
Actually Sony doesn't need to price the PS3 at $400.00 to compete. In fact Microsoft still isn't doing well in Japan with the 360, better than the original Xbox, but that was expected because this time Xbox was the first out of the gate with their console, unlike Sony with the PS2 the last time. It's the first Next-Gen system and that helps sales no matter where you are.
Japan is the largest gaming country in the world. Followed by the USA and Canada and then the U.K. Japanese gamers will buy the PS3 even with a high price tag. For every 60 Xboxes sold in Japan, there were between 1000 and 2000 PS2's sold, based on a WEEKLY sales amount. Now, lets also consider the following. Although you're talking in US funds about the prices that Sony should sell for, when the PS2 was launched, many places offered the infamous bundle packs which included 2 games a memory card and an extra controller. The price tag on these were around $700.00 Canadian. Let's compare that to the 360's Premium bundle which was selling for $500.00 Canadian and although it didn't include any games, it was $100.00 more than the Core system. This just shows that these next-gen systems really aren't all that much more expensive than the last generation's launch.
Japanese buyers will buy the PS3 over the 360 and Sony knows that because of the Japanese market alone they'll surpass the sales of the 360, even if the PS3 has a $600.00 US price tag. A lot of people will wait for systems to drop in price. It isn't going to hurt Sony at all though.
Joe Cooler wrote:Honestly, things are looking very grim as of late for Sony. There is no way they are hitting their promised Spring release date as it stands.
They backed up the launch date on purpose once they saw the way things were going with the 360. Now, they're expecting an October release. Two reasons they did this, One, to instead release the PS3 closer to the release of the Nintendo Revolution. And Two, because it's true that Blu-ray isn't completely perfected yet. It has to do with the thickness of the Blu-ray discs. They're thinner and currently have more errors. Sony once again doesn't care though because of their hold on the Movie industry. Currently Sony has 7 of the Major studios officially signed on to use Blu-ray. HD-DVD, which will now come with the 360 as a USB add-on, but only to play movies only has 3 studios. Two of which also support Blu-Ray. The only studio they have exclusively is Universal. HD-DVD also doesn't support 1080p resolution, while Blu-Ray will.
Toshiba's first HD-DVD player is going to be released this March for $499.99 US which gives them a head start on Blu-Ray, just like the console war. Anyway, the reason Sony is delaying the launch to wait for Blu-ray to be perfected, is also to make sure that the cost for the technology isn't outrageous like you were mentioning. The reason they want to compete with Nintendo's launch is because although Nintendo hadn't been a powerhouse with the Game Cube, this time they're changing the face of gaming. Not only are they doing something which is Unique, it will feel new and will draw in much more casual gamers and those who will be interested just because it will seem like something totally new and never seen before. Not only that, but Nintendo is completely secure financially. They own all the patents to Online console gaming, something they filed for a long time ago which was finally passed in I believe late 2004. Just imagine the royalties they'll receive!
Joe Cooler wrote:Combine that in with the fact that the hard drive may no longer come with the PS3 and your looking at a system in trouble.
The hard drive will still come with the system. Chances are that Sony will copy the 360s core and premium system method. It will help them sell systems quickly, especially in Japan. However, the HDD is a major strong point for the PS3, as the cell processor is reliant on it for many reasons. If sony doesn't go the core/premium bundle route, they're still going to sell the PS3 with a HDD, just not pre-installed.
I'm still waiting to buy my 360 because I own way too many games I haven't played for my PS2, Xbox and Game Cube. I'm really looking forward to The Legend Of Zelda: The Twilight Princess.
If there is some sort of bundle with Final Fantasy XI and a 360, I might buy my 360 come April!
