Making homophobic comments, and calling someone pathetic are two different kettles of fish. The comments can be directed at an entire lifestyle and minority group of people. The pathetic comment is aimed at some guy who really doesnt matter.
I dont even see how you can parralel the two events.
+dammit!!! outposted! That was directed at Maria's comment, wayy up there.
one was said directly to someone. someone who is part of this board. as far as i'm concerned, everyone on this board should matter. the other comment wasn't said to anyone and wasn't directed to an entire lifestyle and minority group of people either. just a comment about someone’s' frustrations about a band. not directed at anyone. you're right you can't compare them. one wasn't meant to be offensive, the other one was.

I'm really freaking tired of mods being attacked for trying to keep this place in order.
We don't lock threads "cause certain mods don't like what is being said", we lock them because we can see problems arising if we leave them open.
If we let things go to the point where everyone's at each other's throats, you'd yell at us for that, too. "Why isn't anyone locking this?!"
Seriously, drop the attitudes against us, we're trying to do our best.

Personnally, I think some threads are locked a little prematurely simply because a mod doesn't want the possibility of a fight to break out. I understand the concern and I think we all appreciate it. I just think it would be better to let things get said so that way there isn't anger boiling over into other threads.
An example is how one thread about Alk3 turned into 4 threads concerning the locking of the topic. If that thread was kept open in the first place things could have been handled there, instead of moving into other sections of the forum.
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just my take on the thread locking, which seems to be happening a lot lately.

I am generally the thread lockingest SOB around. Jim you hit the reason I do lock them, and that is to keep problems from becoming worse. I have a good idea what is going to offend someone as far as posted content. Unfortunately with Aaron and Meandmyoneman army, I caught there comments after the fact. If I can catch stuff like that being posted before anyone else reads it, I'll delete that out and warn them in PM. I have seen too many instances of threads being left open and things getting really ugly, such as some of the threads that ended up the Oskar's under the Matt Violence Award. I just don't want the ugliest sides of us to come out.

You guys just need to stop seeing us as "the man" and realize we're just trying to keep this place friendly and fun to be on.

yes but at the same time try to keep things fair for everyone.

We do, but when the same person keeps breaking the same rules, and one of the mods bans them, that's not us "not being fair"... it's not our fault, it's theirs. We also shouldn't have to warn people every time they do something wrong. Everyone should read the rules before they hit "ok" to join, and realize homophobic comments (regardless of how often they make them in real life, or how many gay friends they have) are going to piss some people off, and potentially hurt someone.
We're just trying to keep this place friendly, and we're not targeting certain people intentionally. End of story.

I don't think any of us see you as "the man." I just think maybe we should make sure things are calm before we go locking threads, because personally I don't think that what is said in one thread carries over to another, at least I've never seen it happen. The only time it does is when a thread is locked prematurely and other threads are forced to be made.
We all appreciate what you mods do. Obviously this place has only lasted this long because of the mods/owners/ex-owners.

I disagree with this completely for the banning of the guy who said "tourrets."
He didn't keep breaking the rules. His banning was unwarranted.

You're unwarranted!

Also, a much more just way to deal with the thread locking/banning would be to have a report system.
If there is ever a post or CMer that people find offensive, what they should do is report that specific post or posts to an admin/moderator in a PM. This way, if a bunch of people report something they find offensive to the mods, the mods can deal with it appropriately. (and obviously if there are a bunch of reports the punishment wouldn't be overly harsh)
There will always be people disagreeing with each other, but at least this way it won't be left up to the discretion of say the opinion of a single moderator that might find something offensive or about to become offensive while no one else will see it that way. A lot of people won't feel as many threads are locked prematurely and the equality that the mods say they're trying to keep will be much more apparant to the rest of the CM.

Instead of having a specific moderator to send the report to, create a dummy user named REPORT or a thread where people can report the stuff, but the posts don't show up, a submission form or something, so that all reports go to the same place instead of to different moderators.

i reeeally like that idea. and, i mean, if it can work on a message board with 100 times as many people as this one and less mods, (i'm speaking of another board i'm on) then it should definitely work on this one.

This is just another ploy by Lanny to become a mod!

Or not, since I was the original mod, I have a lot of ideas for this board.
