There's like five-hundred and sixty.
Seriously, Philadelphia has at LEAST 5 hip hop/rap/r&b stations. Y100 was our only alternative station, and we now only have two rock stations left (one's mostly classic rock, the other's heavier stuff).
I honestly can't see any reason for doing this other than being a racist company. If it wasn't, they could've simply switched the stations so "The Beat" could have the stronger signal. Instead, they're canning Y100 altogether and essentially replacing it with a black gosphel station.

yeah, spanish radio stations are plenty in Houston, it's a perfect example of huge faceless corporations exploiting minorities for a quick buck.
39,710. considering that this online petition has been on a while, i'd say it sucks.

it's got your station on there too.

THE BEAT SCREWED YOU OVER TOO?!
mojo was replaced by the beat. it's not racism it's just aiming for a demographic.

I still have the last hour or so of DRE on cassette with the dead air and whatever it was that came on next. It's a shame we don't have Y100 anymore and I did sign the petition, but at least we've still got XPN! I've been listening to that more than Y100 in the last couple years anyway (although I still did listen to Y100 quite a bit).
That sucks though...I just heard they were going off the air at like 10pm on the 24th.

Really? I'm not a big fan of XPN. I've switched to MMR, basically... which is good, but not even close to the same music as Y100. *sigh*
*goes to Reno's link* Man, this is happening too much. Houston, Miami, Philly, DC.
Oh yeah, and frog, how is it not racism if they're specifically targeting African Americans? If there was a company targeting white people, and they said so in their mission statement, they'd be shut down by complaints.

because it's just a demographic. companies always go after specific races, age groups, salary brackets. they just don't go around announcing it so everyone makes a big deal when they do announce that they're going after a specific group. I'm south asian, and if a radio show came on and said that they would put on a bunch of shows playing Indian songs and talkshows and stuff I wouldn't be insulted.

That may be true, but there's a double standard. Take BET... we've all heard that argument. If there was a WET, there'd be riots all over the country until it was shut down.
As for Y100. I'm not a huge radio listener, and they did play mostly the same songs all day (at least when I listened at work), but I liked what they did for the "community." Concerts, Sonic Sessions, etc. They made the Philadelphia rock world a whole lot better, and it'll suck without them. And yes, we have one too many rap stations - don't need another one.
And I was completely shocked by it. As far as I knew, based on the fact that everyone I know in Philly listens to Y100 as their primary station, I thought Y100 was the biggest station in Philly. It just doesn't make sense...

It was doing very well, yeah. There was no justifyable reason for them to do this.
There's also the fact that Y100 did SO much for charity in Philly. It's just... ugh.
Anyway, if anyone's interested, the protest is almost official (its permit is pending). It'll be in Love park on Saturday at 3pm. Apparently some known bands may be playing.

Oh is it? Then you know how to get there! Yay, we won't get lost!
Monkey didn't mention wanting to go tonight when he came over... and I forgot to ask if he got my e-mail. I say we take the train anyway, though. Finding parking could really suck.

Did they have it? Any big names show up?

It had to be moved from Love Park to the Art Museum steps... no bands or anything showed up, cos it was semi-illegal.

Luckily, we had a cop on our side who let a kid fill out a form and assume responsibility in case anything went wrong (which thankfully it didn't) and we got to have our fun little protest. We were on the news (four stations! NBC, FOX, WB, and ABC!) and everything.
The same people are working on a second one that'll be more like the first one was supposed to be (including legal).

Do you think it achieved anything?

Hopefully. I can't imagine there isn't at least one station owner/rich guy out there looking at all the signatures on the petition, seeing all the media coverage, etc. and thinking "gee, there's a hole in Philadelphia's market... I could make a killing!"
Also, check out a few of my awesome PROTESTival pictures:
The crowd during the DJs speeches.
Jim McGuinn (Y100 program director) speaking.
Look! It's Dali, me, and Melissa!
Yup, folks... right where Rocky jumped up and down.
As we were leaving.

Coool. Glad it got exposure. I know a lot of people (roommates, included) were extremely pissed off about it. I'm more pissed that it was replaced by a RAP station - how is that possibly fair? I just saw a commercial for the "NEW 100.3" on TV. Stupid, rap music is ruining our world (slight amount of seriousness... honestly, most songs embody everything that's wrong with the world today).

Philly is also experiencing a big murder increase. 30 in 3 months. Shows what a 1-station increase of rap music does. hehe.
