I never got an allowance unless I did stuff around the house. Every so often my mom would give me money if I went out with friends just as a nice gesture, or if we went shopping and I wanted a shirt or something she would buy it. It would never be "hey there's an ipod mom, get it for me ok?"

17. Yeah I know it's rather sad, but I have no job, and a guys gotta have money. I would prefer to have a job though, but no place will hire me.

have you tried handing out resumes?

Oh I have. Even damn Sobeys won't hire me. They hire everyone. Their entire staff consists of pot heads who throw cans around in the back room.

is your resume legible? do you just hand them in and then leave or do you ask to talk to the manager? Cause by 17 you should have a job... especially considering you'll either be starting university soon or going out into the workforce in which you might not be able to live at home...

be on the lookout for stores that are just opening. they'll hire just about anyone. hell, they even hired me. and i've been working there for 3 and a half years now.

I type my resume out neatly. I tried to speak with the manager but the person working at customer services said I couldn't and then said she'd hand it to him for me. I often wonder if my resumes even make it to the managers.

I think legally they have to, and they have to be kept on file for a minimum of 6 months... not 100% sure though.

don't just go to one place and hand out one resume. photocopy an assload of resumes and hand them out everywhere.

I've done both, and yet nothing. Maybe I should try a library or something considering most of my volunteer work was done at the school library...

make sure to follow up with your applications. call up the place and enquire as to the status of your resume. a lot of places seem to only consider you if you do that. it shows initiative/enthusiasm. or go in to follow up and introduce yourself to a manager. search the newspapers for ads about who's hiring. apply everywhere with a sign in the window. ask teachers and friends if they know anywhere that needs someone. oftentimes your best bet is networking like that.
