the last time i was in a church was for my best friends wedding .. i had to be there since i was in the wedding .. the priest went into a huge speech and talked about how wrong gay marriage is, how a woman's place is in the kitchen .. basically saying some pretty disgusting things. i mean the people in the church were looking at each other and thinking
so the way he portrayed god is very different ..
plus if god loves everyone and forgives everyone .. what's the point of hell then? why is hell even necessary if everyone is going to be forgiven for their actions anyway?
I can't wait for the school year to start. I'm taking a world religions course, so I'll finally get the chance to understand more about different religions.
I've had some weird "revelations" this summer (though I think that term is a little grandiose for this). One thing I was thinking about is that ... we're playing some pretty foolish games. I mean, with even the slightest possibility that there is a God (of any variation), is it really worth the risk to be going around having sex and, well, sinning in any way really. I mean, with even the slight chance that there is a God, I don't think I want to risk eternal damnation for the sake of fitting in with what today's society expects of a young adult (sex, drinking, drugs, etc).
There's more to it, but I can't really seem to put my thoughts into words.

Even athesiets fit into the equation in some way. Arguing over what religion is right or wrong is pointless.
Okay, then let me run this by you (and everyone). Let's say God is a real stickler on the specifics. You are raised Jewish, and you believe in it with every fibre of your being. Let's say the Christians have it dead on, and you have to have been baptized to get into heaven (is that a christian thing, a catholic thing or both? anyway, ignore my incorrectness and continue). You're doomed to spend eternity in hell, even though you lived a good life, because you happened to get it wrong.
For all we know, figuring out which religion (if any) is right is the most important thing in life.
Well God loves everyone equally though. He isn't going to condemn someone for not worshipping him. He welcomes everyone into his waiting arms. Well thats what the priest said at the funeral pretty much.
That doesn't make any sense though. If God welcomed everyone without exception, there would be no consequence to murder, rape, etc. Hell would be devoid of souls, and therefore useless.
Unless, of course, hell is simply a metaphore for living life without the belief in God - which is a possibility.

Well taking murder and rape into account. If one of God's children takes the life of another one of his children or forces themselves upon one of his children of course they are going to be punished by being sent to hell. But remember there is good and evil in everyone.

Well it's too late for me. I've had sex, I've done/do drugs and I drink. So I'm damned to hell. I can't be saved. I'm a sinner. Now if I'm going to be sent to hell for those reasons, that's pretty sad and I don't agree with that but so be it. I'm going to be sent to hell with rapists and murderers .. because I had sex? Come on now. Hell is going to be full of a lot of teenagers and people I know then so it might not be so bad.
BUT I do plan on having kids one day .. and I don't know what to tell them. Do I get them baptized? Do I take them to church? Do I send them to catholic schools? My only interest in religion these days is for my future children ..

I wouldn't worry joey. I think you have to be pretty bad to be sent to hell. If you have to be absolutley perfect to get into heaven, then it's gonna be one empty place. I swear, I don't go to church, I'll drink someday, and hopefully i'll be having sex one day too, but I do believe in God and stuff. If i'm going to hell though, well I guess I'll be seeing a lot of people there. I still say only murderes and rapists go to hell though. As for your future children let them make their own choices. Talk to them about religioun and heaven and hell and let them choose if they want to go to church or not.

i am an atheist, but if i ever had children i'd want to expose them to the ideas and philiosophies behind different religions. because i don't believe in a god or an afterlife, i wouldn't want them to think there was "one, true way." however, to some, faith is a strength and a comfort. so i don't see the harm in opening doors for children to have the opportunity to pursue that kind of belief. i wouldn't baptize them...but teach them about catholicism so they can make that decision when they are older knowing they wont be offending me. and i'd send them to whichever school was better in the area, the catholic or the public. *shrug* religion doesnt play that big a deal in any of the catholic schools i've attended. you take a course and go to mass. doesnt matter if you belong to the faith or not, seeing how other people worship is always educational and promotes tolerance at least, if not always understanding.
now do you baptize your kids though?
i mean if you do that when they're born they have no choice ..
thankfully my parents left the door open.. my mom took my bro and i to church until we were old enough to decide if we wanted to keep going, neither of us did. they did put me in catholic schools .. though, again something you can't let your child decide on since they're too young .. those decisions are what i mean for when it comes to having kids.
Edit: you already answered the baptize question, my bad

But again, how do you determine that? How bad is pretty bad? Someone commits one murder, they're sorry for it, they'll never do it again .. will they go to hell? Someone commits 5 murders, hell worthy? How can you judge someone based on their actions and who's considered 'evil' and who isn't .. gah.
People can be baptized later in life if they choose to be, so it isn't neccessary to have it done at birth but you can if you want too. I'd say take them to church until they reach an age when you feel they are mature enough to decide whether or not they want to go still. As for schools, which ever one offers the best education they can transfer when their older if they want too.

God decides on that. Also your actions while doing it, before it, and after are taken into account I would assume. Did you plan it or did it just happen as a spur of the moment? Did you enjoy killing them or was it just one blurred motion? Did you feel remorse after and turn yourself in or pray for them or did you hide the body and flee the scene? Many things are taken into account also I think.

But we do know that God loves everyone and wants them to join him in heaven. He welcomes everyone in. The priest said that when someones soul arrives all sins of life are forgotten and the soul is welcomed into the waiting arms of The Lord.

Do I look like a priest to you? No. Geez man i heard this at a funeral. What did you expect the guy to say "Your son shall burn for all eternity in hell even though he was a great kid who liked to party"? Murder and Rape and Suicide those are the unforgiveable sins in my opinion unless you're catholic in which case it's only suicide right?
