I barely recognise the city. I was there around this time 3 years ago. It's a terrible tragedy to see what has become of what was once a truly vibrant city. My heart goes out to those stuck there and we all pray that help and order arrives as quickly as possible.

I've been too afraid to watch whatever that is. I've seen the beginning with the dude talking, but from everyone's reactions I'm afraid of what it shows at the end. I don't want to watch anyone being hurt or killed... anyone care to summarize?

There's no footage, just him talking the entire time. At the end he completely breaks down, it's heartbreaking .. it's just so terrible how things were handled afterwards and his speech at the end just sums it all up .. he could barely talk and he was saying how they weren't sending anyone .. and to just shut up and send someone .. it made me cry.

Sad... but as is such the case in all natural disasters, bureacracy and egos kill the process.

back in 1999, Sydney was hit by the worst hailstorm on record. We had watermelon sized hailstones dropping from the sky. It caused 1 billion dollars worth of damage. Nothing like Katrina of course but still left many people's homes unliveable. The guy who was in charge grossly underestimated the scope of the disaster, rejecting help from the military to help patch people's roofs (imagine the holes in your ceiling after a few watermelons of ice are dropped on you). The guy was sacked but here, the situation was grossly underestimated.

Same thing in New Orleans but on a MUCH larger scale.

I have only read the last 5 or 6 posts, so I don't know what is going on before this...

but I just want to say a few things about Hurricane Katrina.

I am completely heart broken at the way the whole situation is being handled. I have family in New Orleans... I've been there when I was a kid....they are wonderful people... and now we don't know if my family is alive or not.

I'm heart broken that Bush doesn't give a shit. To think that if it was election time, Bush would be right there saying something on camera... a least appearing to be uspet. But no... and we all know why.

I am damn proud to be Canadian right now...

5 days before the US Military... Canadians from Vancouver reached a New Orleans suburb to help.

Now... 4 years ago we had September 11th 2001... which is diverting attention away from this crisis quite well. If this hurricane devestated NYC instead of New Orleans, we can be sure things would be handled differently...

I am hoping this world will realize that it doesnt matter where you were born, where you live, what colour you are, or what you have. We are all the same... we are all one... and its about time we started acting like it.

As happy as I am with Canadian relief effort and everything, alot of local opinion around here, less than half but substantial enough, is that we shouldn't be helping the Americans, and that Canada ought not to give anything to them.

I have to strongly disagree. The people affected most by this disaster were mainly lower class and poverty stricken people. The majority of them also happened to be African American. These aren't people who get to have a say in their government, not like upper crust white folks do, and punishing them because they have a government whose policies you disagree with is deplorable.

They are suffering, they should be helped.

I'd just like to point out the fact that NOBODY in this country has a say what goes on with the government unless they're in office.

That doesn't even matter anyway. This was a natural disaster, and politics shouldn't come into play AT ALL, regardless of who the victims are.

politics do come into play, though. most of the victims of the disaster could have been saved if the system was more efficient.

Very true, and I completely agree.

However, I highly *HIGHLY* doubt if the majority of the victims of a hurricane were upperclass white americans, this kind of magnitude of damage, displacement, and danger[even still now almost 2 weeks after] to peoples health/safety would even be heard of.

what's sad is not only the human lives lost, and countless more bodies to be discovered, but also the environmental disaster. they're pumping all this toxic shit into that lake (albeit the only solution). kill the oyster trade as well.

then i saw the environmental disaster in new orleans
the oil floating everywhere
fires burning on water
if cuba can evacuate 2.5 million people with nearly none a casualty
which is half of their population
if cuba is a communist country
if democracy is free
why can't the united states evacuate one city with nearly none a casualty?

ah if this life were perfect, then it'd be called heaven. if this life was never perfect, then it'd be called heaven. i think we're somewhere in between.
