man, playing music derivative of something done generations before you is hardly innovative. the new kids on the block innovated boy bands. N Sync isn't innovating shit.
there are dozens of indie bands out there right now putting down music that is distinct to them. galaxie 500 didn't sound like anything that came before it or afterwards, and the same goes for big star.
guys like josh rouse, marc dauer and pete yorn, for example, are creating their own styles, as opposed to merely immitating or copying what came before them.
above all, avril lavigne is unoriginal. her music is boring and redundant.

Endymion wrote:Pete Yorn is a great artist and I appreciate him and all, but you can draw parallels to singer/songwriters who've come before, to him, and you can do the same to plenty of great bands. Original material within a broad (or even a narrow) genre has it's place, too.
There's a difference between drawing parallels between two artists, and noticing that one is pretty much the same as the other. Example: There are parallels between Pete Yorn and Bob Dylan, both are excellent songwriters and singers, both guitarists, etc. But both are also very distinct.
N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing, and they're both the same thing as New Kids. The cute one, the one with a bit of actual talent, the bad boy...

My life is so complicated...maybe I should go buy the Avril Lavigne cd. No, I think I'd rather stick pencils in my eyes. That would be less painful.

HARDCORE!!!
OMG. I can't believe I din't think fo you
until now because when I think on
a scale of one to ten you're like YWELVE.
No, seriously?

*clumsyrific* wrote:ok. Let's just stop this here. Narbus, you don't like Avril. Jo-Ann, you do. It's not like anything either of you say is going to change the other's point of view, so it's not really worth it. So, let's just call it a truce. It's not worth it to bicker over somebody's musical opinion.
Not to be mean .. but considering you just came in here and talked about sticking pencils in your eye rather than listening to Avril .. that above statement is crap. Don't get mad at other people for 'bickering' about a musican you don't even like, then come in here yourself and be disrespectful by saying something so immature and rude. There are Avril fans here, this is an Avril thread, so by coming in here and deliberately saying something so offensive like that, when just the other day you got upset at other people for bickering is hypocritical.
Obviously not everyone is going to like Avril and that's fine .. but people were getting upset that Avril came up in the olp part of the forum so the discussion came over here where you don't have to see it unless you click on the AVRIL LAVIGNE thread. If you don't like Avril, then why come into this thread and deliberately be offensive? To piss people off on purpose? If you want to get into a musical debate and talk about why you don't like her music, that's fine and I can respect that, but to come here and just throw out rude and offensive comments for no other reason but to piss people off?? I have no respect for that at all .. :|

whoa, whoa, whoa. Calm down...
Ok, I realize that what I said was immature and unnecessary. I apologize. I was just trying to joke around, but I guess it wasn't that funny.

A few things.
1. When you let your opinion be known in a public setting, you are leaving that opinion open to criticism and attack. That's the trade off for being able to make your opinion known in this way, everyone else gets to make their opinion known, too. So unless you're willing to not ever mention your opinions again, don't get pissy at other people for mentioning theirs.
2. There were a lot more than just one person on each side of the debate.
3. Arguing music is, to me, fun. Just so you know.

There was an Avril Lavigne topic at a papa roach board that i am on, and it got way out of hand with all the arguing that they had to lock it.

Arguing and debating music is fine .. continuously bashing and making offensive comments about the band and the people who like that band, is just plain ignorant
