Not enough media would be able to show up on such short notice. Let's face it, no one really cares about the NHL. There is talks now that a Swiss billionaire is looking at starting a European super league which would be considered more viable than the current NHL structure.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

the press conference was announced with more than enough time for media to show up
i mean.. with the invention of planes and all
the changing of the press conference was for 2 reasons IMO
1. to try and keep interest in the game and show that they are trying with the latest and most likely final found of talks
and 2. to try and see IF anything did happen
it just gives the sides a chance
a slim one that obviously resulted in shit all mind you
but something is better than nothing

NEW YORK (CP) - The No. 1 issue that has plagued the NHL lockout went out the window Monday night when the NHL Players' Association offered a deal that included a $52-million US salary cap.
But the deal was rejected by the NHL.
The surprising move was made by NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin during his secret meeting with NHL executive vice-president Bill Daly in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
According to an NHLPA statement, Daly began the process Monday by offering a $40-million salary cap without ''linkage'' - a fixed link between player costs and league revenues, which has long been the centrepiece of the NHL's bid for cost certainty.
The union counter-offered with the $52-million team-by-team salary cap. The players' proposal also featured more aggressive payroll tax thresholds and tax rates on team payrolls.
''It is indeed unfortunate that with the major steps taken by both sides today we were unable to build enough momentum to reach an agreement,'' Saskin said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.
The union's offer also included the 24 per cent salary rollback on all existing contracts.
While no talks were planned for Tuesday, the fact that both sides made dramatic moves from their longstanding positions Monday night could spur on more last-ditch efforts to save the season.
As it stands, the players have finally accepted a salary cap for the first time in their history while the league gave up on linkage. Now the two sides are separated by $12 million on their cap figures. And with the rollback, two-thirds of the league's teams would be under $40 million.
if the PA and league can somehow compromise on the 12 million that divides them then this could be done

according to that article however, 2/3rds of the league would be under 40 mil with certain teams having to lower a bit

i do think/feel that 52 mil is too high
my only major hope is that some form of revenue sharing is included in this
it would actually, well.. hurt the canadiens (as well as the leafs, rangers, wings, av's, and a few other teams) but in the long run the benefit of strong teams in edmonton, calgary, and in the states is more important for the game and its continued existance in a strong form then anything else.
the best way to explain that is to look at the nfl. green bay, jacksonville (only a pop of 1.5 mil), indy (the teams owner actually had to pay the signing bonus that peyton manning recieved from his pocket because the team couldnt afford it due to a lack of stadium based revenues, but given the nfl's revenue sharing policy he was able to pull it off which has lead to a new stadium in indy)
in the nhl, cap or no cap none of this would happen based solely on the amount of revneues of the big vs small market teams which needs to be addressed and is paramount for the leagues continued survival

i think it was bob mckenzie lastnight on tsn who said something along the lines of he had been in contact with one of the GM's or some such of a team in the lower bracket for team payrolls.. the difference between his team and the top team (detroit) was 40 million. in the words of that gm they'd like for that difference to be 10 million ideally. bob asked what about 20 million? and gm replied "we wont like it as much but we'd probably take that because we'd still have a chance to compete"
