Thats something I'd do, in fact, thats something I've done.

(because i've had lots of problems with viruses installing themselves onto my computer. anyway) when i install a program under my administrator account, i should be able to access the program from my user account, but some programs won't let me. like the hub. every time i want to use the hub, i have to log off my user account and log onto my adminsitrator account. anyone got any suggestions on how i can use my programs when i am logged in as a user?
Easy. Log in as the administrator, go into control panel > user accounts > change an account > choose your regular user account > change my account type, and set it to be an administrator also.
Of course, then you'll have the virus problem again, but if you change it back to a standard user after installing the programs that you want, you might be okay.

Why is it that I can play Half-Life 2 smoothly and flawlessly, yet trying games like Thief 3 or Doom 3 results in a jerky laggy mess?

Twould be the game itself.

What I'm wondering though, is why my system can't handle those games, while it can handle a game like Half-Life 2.
Also, the Doom3 demo is really screwed up on my comp. Everything is black and the textures are all screwy.

Also, the
Windows Game Advisor claims I should be able to play them all (though admittedly Doom 3 is only playable by a scant margin, so I'll let that one go).

Remember us poor shlubs who can't even run games like that!

robbo
upgrade your drivers
check the games site for driver specific patches etc
and run all that crap

Well, I'm just playing around with demos right now, so drivers won't help.
Question: Do Mac users have to deal with all this shit? I know this is bordering on blasphemy, but it's starting to become tempting...

glad no one tried to asnwer my question - I fixed it myself.

If no one answers, usually it's because no one knows.
If one was to say "I don't know", that shows that they don't know something.
If they say nothing, it's not admitting a lack of knowledge.
Also, I'm guessing the problem had nothing to do with being sent over MSN...?

I wasn't criticising, I meant it was good no one wasted time figuring It out since I fixed it.
I downloaded DivX and it played it. But the person who sent it to me has the same version of Winamp I do, and he could play it easily in that. I don't really know what caused it.

it doesn't really matter if it's the same version of winamp if you don't have the codec, i believe. anyway, good for you for figuring it out

What do you mean drivers wont help? A driver will effect how a game runs, regardless of whether its a demo.
Secondly, Macs generally have the same problems as PC's when it comes to running a high end game like Doom 3. Doom 3 requires more than an entry level PC to run properly, never mind nicely. If you were ugrading you'd be spending a lot more money on a Mac gaming machine, than a PC gaming machine. Buying a 2.0ghz mac costs far more than buying a 2ghz PC. Performance wise, the 2ghz mac will beat out any PC of similar specs with ease. Macs in general are far better at multitasking so running day to day applications are far better on a Mac. The problem comes when you play a game. A mac has trouble "focusing" on just the game so you dont really get any kind of performance hike. You do pay a lot more for it though.

Really? That was probably it, then. Ah well, it works now.
Coincidentally, what I was watching was a Richard Dean Anderson show...
