From what I could understand from your posts, it sounds like you need to run a virus/adware sweep on your computer. Sounds like spyware/adware is hijacking your browser... there's no need to format... unless you can't get any programs to run... but maybe you could find an online sweep that'll get rid of the offending adware.

This is why keeping IE in working order at all times is good. It's an integral part of Windows.

Cracky wrote:Ok. So apparently XP is doing a random check to see if this is my copy, which it is. The problem is that using Internet Explorer, I cannot open any Microsoft/MSN/Hotmail windows. I don't know why, its been like this for so long, and It didnt matter because we have Firefox. Except that now I have to activate windows to prove its my copy, and I cant, therefore I cannot use my computer in its entirety.

What the fuck am I supposed to do?

Everytime it comes on to a Microsoft site it flips to "Search Now" or something.

You can also activate Windows by telephone.

"How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.
2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3. Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.
5. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows."

But that's weird, usually it makes you activate Windows within 30 days of installing it.

But yeah, getting that problem with IE fixed would probably be a good idea.

Probably the codec or possibly the program you're using.

Could it be the RAM?

My computer now thinks that every picture I want to save is a bitmap. This is false.

Help me.

Mine used to do that too when I'd have too many applications open or running low on memory, so I'd reboot and everything would be fine.

It's an issue with IE, actually. Here's a link to how to fix it:

 Works like a charm... this issue happens to me way too often.

There's a bunch of programs to convert... but the easiest that I've got would probably be dBpowerAMP Music Converter. You might need some codecs for it to get it to convert from wma, but I'm not sure. Regardless, those can all be found on the program's site, and they're super easy to install.

Um so it turns out that it was more than just that. So now my computer is in some repair place and wont be fixed until next friday at the latest. Grrr. I ended up not touching it and asking my parents who got some dude to come and he said alot of stuff I dont understand which ended in the computer tower being taken away and sinead being a very very sad girl indeed.

Dammit! The codec pack I was using just expired (BASTARDS!). So now I have to try again.

Nikki, what was that one that you keep telling me is great, but keeps breaking my computer when I try it? I figure I'll give it another go...
