"Black Irish" is often taken to mean Irish people with dark
hair and eyes. One romantic story is that they are the
descendants of shipwrecked sailors of the Spanish Armada.
Unfortunately for the story, it is very unlikely that enough of
the sailors survived for their genes to be in the population
visible today. A variation on this theme says they are
descended from Spanish Moors who traded with people on the
west coast of Ireland. Another explanation is that it's
common in Irish to give people nicknames based on their hair,
such as Seamus dubh and "black Irish" is just a carryover of
this into English. Some people say that the "black Irish"
were the original inhabitants of the island and all the rest
were just blow-ins.

One other interpretation is that "black Irish" refers to the
descendants of Irish slaves taken to the Caribbean island of
Montserrat during Cromwell's time. The descendants of these
slaves and black slaves from Africa live there to this day.
The surprising thing is that they still speak with an Irish
accent!

I think i believe the gaelic theory because often things are mistranslated into english from it. However, look at the climate of Ireland. Pasty freckled freaks like me feel good there! Its always raining, year round, and you rarely ever get a hot summer, hot to them being 20 degrees C.

The other reason that I believe red/light haired and fair skinned people were the natives of Ireland is because the irish are the only culture in the whole world where red hair occurs naturally. Look it up, its true.

Ironically today my socials teacher commented that "I have the look of the black irish" today :lol:

. I was like "Yeah....." and then my friend goes "Yeah but thats not her real hair!" No longer am I black irish, she knows my dirty secret :neutral:

Yeah...me too. I'd say when it comes in the wash, I'm mostly Irish and alot Scandanavian. And aren't Ireland and Spain relatively like climates? Or am I just crazy? My friend claims he is black Irish. Whatever :lol:

That is really interesting that red hair only comes from Ireland though. If I don't go where I want to in school, I think I'll get a work visa and go work on an Irish island. That would rock.

I had the chance to go to ireland, but I passed it up because it would have meant choir practice six hours a week.

I don't quite remember, from whenever they were like "We need more alto's!!" to the trip itself. It would mean I'd have three hours on monday (which I already had) and then three hours again on tuesday. or, for joint rehearsals, I'd have to stay for... a long time. I don't know exactly how long.

Well, this year, with only three hours a week, I'm going to Argentina. And possibly Spain in the fall. That's a deal I like better.
