Dabekk wrote:A couple questions:

For all the people who hate Avril Lavigne and wish to mutilate her in various ways, I would be interested to know why you guys hate her so much.

Also, how could her tie possibly be construed as skanky?

Furthermore I would like to say a few things in her defense. For those people who find her personally annoying: finding her annoying is fine. However, I think that you should at least acknowledge the fact that she does, in fact, act like herself, rather than how record companies expect her to act. So if you find her annoying, that's fine, but give her some credit for being an individual amongst an industry of increasing conformity.

I would also like to point out to the people that hate Avril a couple things. First, she writes her own material. So if you hate her songs that is fine as long as you acknowledge that they are, in fact, her songs. Also, she does actually play an instrument. I believe in a different topic some time ago about Avril Lavigne someone pointed out that in the video for 'Complicated' she plays the guitar, while she only sings in live performances. Well for you I'll say that in OLP's video for 'Naveed' Raine plays the guitar, but he doesn't live. 'Nough said.

Moreover, I would like to express my belief that Avril Lavigne is a beautiful young woman, a talented song-writer, and has an amazing voice.

1. The tie is skanky because it draws attention to her knockers.
2. So she writes her own material. Yipty do. Writing your own material isn't something to be proud of if the material in question is crap. PS: Glance at the credits on her cd. All of those songs have a professional song-writer down as co-writer. So there goes that theory.
3. So she plays her own instrument. So do all the people in my high school band. That doesn't mean they deserve a record deal. PS#2: Pavoritti just sings, doesn't play his own instrument. Does that make him a crappy musician? Ditto on Billie Holiday. And since the London Philharmonic ONLY plays instruments and doesn't actually sing, well they must suck too.
4. You honestly just tried to compare OLP to Avril? One is a rock BAND, the other is a solo chick. OLP has 5 albums and nearly 10 years behind them, the chick has one album and a few months. One has multiple Juno awards and the reputation that comes with several hit singles/albums. The other has one album, an MTV awards (yipty), and zero proof of longevity. That is NOT "Nough said."
5. Where was Avril's 'underground' fan base? The people who remember her back when? OH WAIT. There aren't people like that. Why? Because she got signed based off an image. She didn't tour the crappy bars, didn't put in the 'bitch' time that goes with actually starting a band. She was a pseudo-punk, so she got a deal. That being said, when someone is made famous based primarily off an image like she did, that image is therefore fair game when making a judgement on her. She is damn near EVERY stereotypical punk chick EVER. The spikes, the belt, the "crazy" tie, give her a mohawk and she's done with the checklist. Yet she claims to be "original," despite Madonna, Courtney Love, Joan Jett...the list goes on. The only difference is she lacks any kind of spine, so all of her "crazy punkness" is just in apperance. Check out the music. Where's the heavy guitar riffs? The volume? The punk sound? She isn't Joan Jett, she's a washed down version of PINK. She's there for that painful transition between liking Mandy Moore and liking Pink.
And I simply CANNOT see how you don't watch her interviews and such and realize that the whole "tough girl" thing is a giant act she puts on whenever a camera is rolling. It's so obvious it HURTS.

Enjoy.

^^ I'd also like to add that Raine has been known to play guitar while performing Naveed live. Sometimes he doesn't, but most of the time he does...

For those of you wondering about the tie is skanky thing and why it doesn't apply to guys:
Guys wear ties normally. They are part of a suit, or the shirt and tie combo. Hey, they even rhyme. Guys and ties. Ties and Guys. Would you wear it in a box? Would you wear one with a fox? Anyway.
Girls do not usually wear ties. Girls wear dresses and necklaces. Why? Because girls look good in dresses and necklaces. Not so much in ties. Plus, no rhyming.
So, when a girl wears a tie, it is for one of two reasons:
1. She's a tomboy. A tomboy is a girl who acts like a guy. So, as a 17 year old boy is defined in large part by being very damn horny, a tomboy at age 17 would be a very horny girl. Or, if you will, a skank.
2. She likes to draw attention to her knockers.

So, what have we learned today? Guys in ties = normal. Not skanky, not drawing attention to man-boobs.
Girls in ties = skanks.

Take this knowledge with you as you walk down the road of life. It will serve you well.

/edit: Shit and tie combo? Okay, time for sleep.

There's this weird kid at my school who started wearing ties over his t-shirt (because he's punk, or he thinks he is). He wears, like, regular ties with fucking argyle on them though so it doesn't look "right"

Okay the whole tie thing and being 'skanky' is really dumb, I'm sorry .. if she wanted to draw attention to herself there's plenty of ways she could it and putting a tie around your neck doesn't make you skanky. I can see if she was talking around half naked all the time like Britney Spears or something but she doesn't ... plus I don't listen to a person based on their clothing choices ... it's about the music, not her fashion decisions

you have no evidence to support the assertion that avril is acting like herself. let me point out a few things:

1. there is obviously, based on the huge success of her album and singles, a huge market for this power-pop anti-prep music right now. perhaps you didn't notice the booming rise of emo and skate clothing?

2. record companies are very good at morphing images. just look at sugar ray or *n sync. these are bands whose mainstream personas are very different from their real lives.

3. perhaps the most damning evidence, most of what avril says about her music and hobbies are either half truths or lies. for example, she cannot skateboard at all. a pro was hired and was on set when she had to shoot that "trick" for complicated. secondly, she doesn't write her own songs, she co-writes them. can you say "lyrics only?". lastly, she can't play the guitar, in fact, she never plays it live.

she is, however, taking lessons.

avril lavinge is a product of the market. it's that simple.

The tie thing is just another bad little fad that people will duplicate today and condemn tomorrow.
