FYI for those travelling between Canada and the US

Many of you are planning on traveling across US and Canadian borders this Summer for OLP shows. Please be aware that as of June 1, 2009 you are required to present a Passport, Passport Card, NEXUS card, or Enhanced Driver's License in order to gain entry and re-entry. Birth certificate/driver license/State or Province issued ID combinations are no longer acceptable. Please visit http://www.getyouhome.gov/ for more details.

Matt you should say that is for Driving only. You still need a passport to fly..

Also for you r info you can get both a passport and a passport card for a little extra money.

Correct. Passport or equivalent WHTI document is required for all methods of transportation across the boarders.

Good point on the card, Gail. You can get those for a little extra when you apply for your passport.

I was confused by your top statement. I know to cross by car you can use a passport, a passport card of even a special enchanced license. When I renewed my non driver I could of gotten it enchanced for another $20.00. I still can. This way I have both.

For flying you can only use a PASSPORT.. The cards are not valid on planes.

Just an FYI i figured i would throw out there.

My wife still has her maiden last name on her passport. So i figured I would call both the US and Canadian border control to see if its required to have her name changed to her current last name.

Canada does not require a passport to gain entry by LAND . by Air yes, they do require a passport. All that is required by land is a Birth Certificate and another form of ID(Drivers License) .

The U.S. however DOES require a passport by land AND Air. I questioned both Canadian and US border controls if my wifes maiden last name would be an issue and they said no, but to bring a marriage certificate *just in case*.

Some country's do require your current last name to be shown on your passport. So, give a call to the country's border control that your visiting before you send in your passport renewal forms (as it costs $75 to renew). If you have been married less than a year, Your passport renewal is free of charge.

Yep, we'll let you in but you can't get out!

I live close to the border and can still gain entry to the US with just a drivers license and birth certificate. I think they can be difficult about it if they want to so I wouldn't take any chances - but it seems like they are still giving people a bit more flex time to get things worked out.

you can thank congress, it has nothing to do with canada.... then again for me i need a passport, a copy of my dads greencard (i was actually told for whatever reason to carry that.. i dont even have the slightest clue as to why), 2 hours, knowledge of various brown people in various movies that may or may not have the same name as a family member in some movie that i may or may not have seen and that is utterly inappropriate to be discussing at a fucking border (movie about egregious drug use and the munchies + homeland security officials? really? are you fucking serious?!) and not talking about concert attire (no i will never let kunHO live that one down... ever)
ah well
at least i dont need to get tanned.

I know still early but for those of you flying up on Air Canada. AirCanda had on their site that carry on luggage is not allowed on flights now. This is Canada to USA. For USA to Canada says you can bring. Just be prepared if you are flying. Might change by Early March.

Has anyone crossed the border from Ontario to New York over the Rainbow Bridge recently with just a Driver's License and birth certificate?

I know they now have specific documents you need but are they strictly enforced?

I'm hoping to go to the show in North Tonawanda tomorrow night but only have Driver's License and Birth Certificate.

Thanks
Mike

If there is a road, you can cross there.

Or you can try crossing in the woods, but Mantracker will hunt you down.

you lost me. Don't you have a passport. I do not think you need a visa if you are from somewhere else. I know Americans don't

From experience and talking to customs agents. You need an enchanced license or passport card to cross between USA/Canada. A passport is good. I will be hones tdo not know how it work with someone from a outside North America

Flying is passport nomatter what.

thanks guys, sorry i should have been a bit clearer. I am flying into Canada, then driving into the US. From what I can gather so long as I have my passport and international drivers licence i can cross over at any point, there is no particular town i need to go through - unless i'm declaring goods - which i wont be. I dont need a Visa in Canada, Australians are exempt from temporary visas, and I have already done my temporary tourist visa with the US online so should be all good :)

Thanks!!!!
