Did punk rock get it right?

I hate that motherfucking 2 second gap at the end of every song. Those worthless Apple bastards can't even rip a CD worth a shit, not to mention you have to install Requiem and pray that it breaks iTunes so you can play the songs someplace else without having to bastardize the file any more than it already is. Fuckers.

I'm a complete whore for the record industry lately. I mean, I've always bought CDs of bands I like--my most recent purchase was Franz Ferdinand's new album--but now I've become a person who buys it on iTunes if it's released before the CD (well, significantly before; a week or two won't mean anything to me, but when we get into months, then I can't help it) and then when the CD comes out I buy it again.

Except that I'm poor, so more often what happens is I don't buy it in any way, shape, or form, ever, unless I really really love the band (see: OLP, FF, Stars, etc.).

But CD art and lyric booklets keep me buying. Don't forget that, bands who decide to skimp on cover art. I'm watching.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.
Waiting for something else,

I think I'm actually gonna buy an mp3 album for the first time ever.
Flipron stuff seems to be absolutely impossible to torrent (I've tried and tried), and as much as I'd prefer to have a hard copy with eccentric cover art, it costs at least twice as much, without even adding on the price of shipping it from the UK.
I've been streaming the 6 songs up on their myspace over and over again, and if I buy it I could actually put it on my iPod!

Oh, by the way, Flipron are absolutely awesome. Check it out http://www.myspace.com/flipron

I miss CDs too. I actually was one of the crazy kids last year that had a Discman, not an iPod. I got weird looks walking around in public places with that monster, I tell you.

But I agree, iPods just lead to laziness. I'm the only person I know that actually makes an effort to put correct information in, and that's limited to album covers and release date. It really takes the juice out of things. Sure, it's a lot easier and access to music is wider, but... gosh, I miss having to listen to entire CDs without having the option of switching to other bands in a heartbeat.

That was gonna be my suggestion.

If you want the original quality mp3s that the artist uploaded, use this site:

http://file2hd.com/

And since you're in Canada, you're lucky and won't even need to use a foreign proxy to get them!

Because you can't find the torrents anywhere!
Also, I was aiming to get more than the 6 songs on their myspace through this cd-buying venture. You know, get ones I hadn't heard before.

It's cool though, because I just finally signed up for the iTunes store and bought most of their discography that way. And it's oh-so delicious.

This thread makes me oh so very sad.

I don't care if it's out-of-date to buy cds, I still do it, and will continue to do so until it's no longer possible.

I'm with you. (and that goes for vinyl, too) I want an actual piece of something I can have, hold in my hand and look at. If I choose to transfer it to an mp3 player, then I can, but this way I've got my cake and I'm eating it, too. The number of CD/LP's I own versus legitimate music files I've acquired is something like 10.000 to 20.

Eric Harvey of Pitchfork wrote an absolutely fantastic article about the social history of the Mp3. I highly recommend that everyone read it. At least if you are interested in the implications of Mp3's on music culture.

http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/ ... f-the-mp3/

Regardless, I for one won't really care when the CD dies. I think Mp3's and digital music in general has so pervaded music culture that you'd miss them far more than the CD if they disappeared. Because of the Mp3, bands without money or a label can upload their music to places like Myspace, or onto their own personal website and gain an audience they could never of 20 years ago. I imagine that the Mp3 has largely contributed to the popularity of indie bands among music listeners. Previously, the only places you could hear new music was on the radio or television. In both cases, airplay was largely dictated by the amount of money thrown at promoting the band. In short, the Mp3 has decentralized music. The only thing I'll miss if digital music continues to grow is the disappearance of record stores but even then, people have been lamenting that since the arrival of the cassette tape. Just remember record labels hated the idea of "mix tapes." After that, the CD-R was the new enemy. The Mp3 is simply the pinnacle of music sharing. The logical extension of what the mix tape brought us.

As for iTunes, yes it sucks for burning CD-R's. Just remember burning CD-R's was never its intended purpose. iTunes simply offers a place to buy music, listen to it, and transfer songs to an iPod. Dare I say, it does it far better than any other system in terms of functionality and ease of use.

I love how music moved to digital...although I agree, it has really stopped me from listening to full albums, like I did with Naveed/Clumsy. Maybe that's why those bands (of that time) are still favorites of mine. I just find a discman hard to use anymore...but...

I still buy cds and transfer most of my music that way. I have a messy collection of cds in my car...in fact, I bought Burn Burn twice! I had to have it but the store I was at didn't have the deluxe...so I bought it and went back the following week to pick up the deluxe.

I believe Raine even talked about this very subject in an interview...where he said that he misses the days when you could only go and buy one new album at a time and you'd listen to the whole thing over and over again...wow, gotta find that but I have no idea where to look anymore!

I only buy CD's of my favorite bands anymore. I also have two copies of Burn Burn. I pre-ordered mine with my ticket to the NYC show so I knew I'd have time to get it the day it was released. I didn't realize it wasn't the deluxe edition so I went out the next day and bought Burn Burn Burn. Oops. Oh well, the autographed the inside of the regular edition for me at the acoustic session so I'm keeping it.
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

Glad I'm not the only one who bought it twice! I would only do that for OLP though. I will refer all those who laughed at me to this thread...
