separatists in Canada

Post by avarae »

hey, I know this is TOTALLY off subject, but as you may know I'm from Texas and I'm a freshman which means I'm taking world geo. We just finished studying the chapter on Canada and my teacher makes us do these "position papers" as she likes to call it which requires me to argue a side of an arguement she gives us. The one she gave us this six weeks asks us if we think the "separatist movement in Canada will probably gain strength in the next 20 years and will result in splitting Canada into two different countries (Quebec and Canada)." I would just like to here from you Canadians out there and get some help from people who know a lot about, b/c we haven't gone over it much so if you could lend a hand I would much appreciate....
How is it that a great band like Our Lady Peace doesn't get recognized as often as they should? Ha, I know the answer to that one; because they're good.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

actually it was kinda risky for awhile there, but now for teh first time in quite a long time, we have a liberal govenment in Quebec instead of the seperatist party, which means things are getting better. It's a very complicated issue, the french feel like they're losing their culture, and being treated unfairly. the rest of us believe they're being treated special, and getting extra stuff that the rest of us don't. Plus the french and English have always had some resentment, it's dates back to the begining of northamerican colonization. Bascailly both sides are right in their own way

Pretty simple, it won't happen in the next 20 years and I very much doubt it will happen in our lifetime.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

It's not going to happen, at least not for a while. The seperatist movement has kind of died in recent years. When was the last reforendum on this? 95? Either way, it kind of got shot down. *shrug*

i think there's probably more chance of alberta separating in the next 20 years than quebec seperating, not that there's much chance of that happenning.

actually i'm doing an essay on this...

i think you guys are forgetting just how close the 95 referendum was.
50.6% for NO
49.4% for YES

I think it will happen in our lifetime, especially if another bourassa or levesque type comes into power

Separatists are starting to realize that they won't be able to keep Canadian currency and that they won't be able to keep all the dependencies they had been hoping for.

i think the better question is whether quebec will ever go ahead and sign the constitution. or has the whole point of this action been lost with all the time that's passed?

yes it was very close, but the movement has been going downhill steadily since then, and i see no reason for a resurgeance in the popularity of this movement to occur.
