Dreads

Post by Joey »

Has anyone attempted putting dreads in their hair? I know they're permanent and once you have them in for over a week you pretty much have to cut them out if you don't want them anymore and I've read through the FAQ here: http://www.knottyboy.com/cgi-bin/faq but I'm looking for personal opinions of people who have had them.

Anybody? 8-)

attempted to put them in.

got a bunch of stuff from http://www.dreadheadhq.com

put about 3 dreads in and then my mom freaked out, said we were doing it wrong, it was going to look horrible and i should wait to get them done professionally. so then i had to go through the joy of ripping them out again.

my tip to you: get them done professionally.

it's not a cop out.

or at least find someone who knows what they're doing to put them in.

Actually yeah I've heard it's worse to do them professionally .. I don't want all that chemical shit in my hair and apparently they scam you by merely 'twisting' your hair rather then dreading it. The Knotty Boy wax is supposed to be the best (and all natural) so if I do it I definitely won't trust a professional unless they come very well recommended. I'd rather a friend do them .. once the stuff is in your hair you have about 3-5 days before it really starts to settle that way if I don't like it I can still get them out.

Getting my hair braided fried my hair so I'm hesitant to try anything new :uh:

I had them in for a couple months about three years ago. I used some wax that just came from a specialty shop in Vancouver. We didn't do it right, (my brother did it) because it was his first time and they were really just twisty thingies for the first couple weeks or so.

Then I tried to brush them out, and they knotted. I kept them in for another 2 or 3 months, then to get them out, we used a clothes iron and a shitload of paper towel and melted them out. It took forever, and after we got some wax out, we would have to try to brush them, then melt some more. We eventually got them all out, but once they were out my hair was still pretty waxy for a while.

My brother's girlfriend got hers done about a year and a half ago, professinally. They looked AWESOME. She has blond hair, and got a few of the tips died darker, and that looked really good. For the first while at least, they managed to look messy but not gross. She left them in for a year, and by the end they just stuck to each other. If you want to keep them good, you have to keep working on them, around the roots so they keep seperate from the other ones.

My brother tried doing his last year. He has fairly long, curly hair. He didnt use wax, just a knitting needle or somthing, and pulled the knots through over and over so they stuck out. Problem was that he only got to the two on the front of his head and it looked like he had horns. This was at my Catholic gramdmother's funeral.

From what I've read dreads are really high maintenance which is fine .. I'm just worried about when I don't want them in anymore and I have to chop my hair off :uh:

I'd do them professionally if I knew a good reputable place but I don't know of any around here

For some reason I don't think the people here would be interested in that

I did find a place in Toronto who specializes in dreads though :D
