jillian's listening presentation - covers

Postby its4am_isanybodyhome » 2/18/2006, 12:30 pm

okay, so for my music class, i have to do a listening presentation. i have to compare two different versions of the same song--for example, a cover and an original, or two different covers--and write out the form, instrumentation, etc. and i would prefer to have two that sound really different. i'm not supposed to download the music, but oh well. i'm just looking for suggestions, ideas. i may be willing to buy cds. oh yeah, i also have to do another one in my guitar class, so that's 4 songs.

Ryan Adams cover of Wonderwall. Oasis did the original. I'm sure you know that.

If you need something really different, try Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana and The Bad Plus.

Baby One More Time by Britney Spears and Fountains of Wayne (if you wanted to demonstrate how a really bad song can become quite good when done by someone with some talent).

You say 2 different "versions" do they need to be covers? If they can be remixes, check out Verve Remixed and Verve Unmixed volumes 1-3. I would especially recommend Nina Simone's Sinnerman. Motown Remixed and Motown Unmixed is a similar series, but there's only one volume. The best remix on there (IMO) is ABC by the Jackson 5.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit

They're *very* different but I love them both. I have the Tori Amos file if you want to use that.

I like to Tori version as well, and it is different, but not AS different as the Bad Plus version. TBP does it in a jazz style with piano, bass, and drums (all acoustic) and no vocals.

Joy Division's Love will Tear us Apart, and Fall Out Boy's cover.
Fall out boy did it all acoustic, so it totally different than the rock/synth thing that Joy Division does.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Ooh, true!

It's funny how that song is only excellent in cover form.

The Ramones and Rob Zombie's cover of "Blitzkrieg Bop".
KC and the Sunshine Band (I think that's what they're called) and White Zombie's cover of "I'm Your Boogieman".

Ooh, I can one up that.

The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
Jason Mraz - Blitzkrieg Bop

Seriously... his version is slow and melodic. It couldn't be any more different from the original. I didn't like it at first but now I absolutely adore it.
