"Microsoft" E-mail

Postby Axtech » 9/9/2003, 1:29 pm

I just got an e-mail from "security@microsoft.com" saying that I should download a patch "immediately".

Actually, the subject is "Use this patch immediately!".

I haven't even opened the e-mail, but I knew enough to check the message source and see what it says without opening it.

'Microsoft' wrote:Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!

Sounds pretty fake to me. "There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!". Not even proper grammer. Why three decimal places? Oh, right. I forgot that my .001 computers got infected.

So, a warning to you. If you get this e-mail, do not open it. If you open it, don't download the "patch".

Fake.

If IE or Windows needs updates, they'll either download automaticall through XP, or IE will go to an update page instead of your homepage when you start it.

What scares me is that either of my parents would have opened it in a flash (it was actually addressed to my dad).

My dad has two more of these things in the inbox!

The "return path" is admin@duma.gov.ru ... Does that mean anything to anyone?

Wow, that's how long it took for someone to suck your dick and be finished? For shame Robert, for shame.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I just got a genuine e-mail from MS with a link to the window's update site for a critical security update. I'm guessing it's because of this.

I was gonna say, we learned that in French class. I'm pretty proud of myself for remembering that after 4 years.

Ahh, I see.

But then what about when you do have decimals? How do you know the difference between 5.000.000.001 (Five billion and one) and 5.000.000.001 (Five million and one thousandth)?

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... hreat_list

This is a really good site to watch, and refer non-computer savy people to. It shows all the latest threats, and how they are spread including copies of the emails to look out for.

Sometimes when it comes from an official source, it sinks in a little faster.

Also, if you're looking for a scanner, this is one I use a lot

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/houseca ... t_corp.asp

There will be a pop up window asking you to give it access to scan your comp. It's all good though, it's pretty complete IMHO :)

And Stace is right about that Online Virus scan site. It's the same one I use and it's always up to date. Definitely a site worth bookmarking!

I keep getting pop-ups about how my computer security is at risk and my IP address is "leaking"... And it's referring me to all these sites about how to stop it...

Should I be concerned...or not?
