It's up on Pledge again!

REALLY digging 'Nice to Meet You.' 'Hiding Place for Hearts' is a great building song with a phenomenal vocal performance by Raine. Of course, I love 'Drop Me,' listened to that for awhile now. I do like 'Falling into Place,' great lyrics, but it''s my least favorite on Vol. 1. Production value is so damn high on these recordings, I love it. Like others said, it's got a modern feel with a lot of classic OLP elements thrown in. Can't wait to see these live and hear Vol. 2.

Hiding Place turned out wonderfully...Nice To Meet You is really growing on me after a few listens. Falling Into Place could take some getting used to and I agree it does sounds more like a Raine solo song than a OLP track. Not a bad thing...just different. Waiting to take this in as a complete work once vol 2 drops!

Yay! Really digging this!

I'd put all 4 above "Won't Turn Back" so I'm really pleased. I'd personally love another rocker to knock my socks off as much as Heavyweight did, but I certainly am enjoying these.

Love the vocals, all the layers and some of the slightly weirder lyrics are great.

So glad to have new OLP music, really happy, can't wait for Vol 2!

I'm really digging this EP! It definitely has a modern feel, but with so many layers and it sounds anything but formulaic. I can't quite predict where the song is going at any given moment, which is great!

"Drop Me in the Water" has been on repeat for me for the last little while - that outro is crazy and the lyrics are simple but quite powerful. "Hiding Place for Hearts" is a very strong piece - very epic-sounding. It starts off quiet and that rolling accompaniment to the melody is so captivating. It's anthemic without being generic. "Falling Into Place" is more poppy but I love the lyrics and the "young, young, young" part. There are many musical parts in this piece that keep it from being a standard pop song...I don't think this sounds like a solo Raine song. OLP has proven over the years that it is able to experiment with diverse styles (some are more failures than others, but I've learned not to box them into one type of sound). "Nice to Meet You" is also edging in the poppy zone, but I really like what I'm hearing. I love the chorus and the lyrical content. "I will wait for you to come (calm?) down / I would like to meet you" - suggests that the other person is not in the right place (psychologicaly, perhaps) to have an honest heart-to-heart, but that person is in an a more emotionaly mature space to give them that time to grow. Or it could be referring to a higher being. I love lyrics that are open to interpretation!

Can't wait to hear the second half of the EP!
And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along

WHOA!! This is GREAT. They sound so incredibly refreshed. Raine is hitting a wide vocal range and the new drummer brings a driving force to the songs. Nice to meet you is the stand out for me. Hiding place for hearts and DMITW are fabulous as well. Falling into place will take some listens for me. I'm very excited.

Wow.

I just slapped the headphones on and finished my first listen through of all the songs. Not much else that I can say that you guys haven't said already. Very brief set of songs, but I really enjoyed what I heard. Falling Into Place I think I enjoyed more than any of the rest of you. The lyrics struck me and maybe because I see some parallels to my own life in it, but I liked everything about the song. Could it have fit on a Raine solo album? Absolutely. However, I feel like it's got just enough of everyone else in the band to make it OLP. Nice To Meet You was cool for me because it's not like anything else we've heard from them before. I am very interested to hear Volume 2. I don't think adding Volume 2 will make this a cohesive album. It really is a collection of songs, but I think it's on track to be executed much better than Burn, Burn. Also, how about all those Duncan backing vocals?

Well happy to see that i'm not the only one who thought that it was Chantal and not Duncan!
However i don't know how Falling Into Place or Nice To Meet You will be live...overally the whole EP is more "studio driven" than live...i listened the songs with the headphones and they were another story respect my first listen...however i really like the songs...it seems that the guys are on a new direction (for me more "pop" than "rock") but i like them because they're trying to create something new and original (not like the same pop songs that are all over the place)...at least we have a "shining" Raine and i'm pretty happy...in Hiding Place for Hearts i have chills everytime...Matt will you update the lyrics in the songs section?

The songs are pretty poppy and catchy. In some ways the EP reminds me of Paranoid in Healthy Times without the artistic restrictions. Sort of more mainstream sounding, but with more OLP creativity present. I probably would have liked HIPT if Bob Rock hadn't been the driving force behind it.

Does any one know if Arnold Lanni worked on any of these?

>i don't know how Falling Into Place or Nice To Meet You will be live...overally the whole EP is more "studio driven" than live

My thoughts too. I felt like Hiding Place for Hearts was good based on the live performances I'd seen prior to the EP release. I think it sounds much better on the EP. Loss of layers and vocal levels for the falsetto on stage makes it shine more on the EP.

Nice to Meet You occasionally reminds me of bowie for some weird reason.

I was wondering if Lanni had anything to do with these songs as well. I get almost a HINAFYC vibe if it was a grown up. The lyrics are gravity/ SM esque if you listen and imagine them on those records... but at the same time, like I said before, they just sound incredibly refreshed. These 4 songs out do Curve and BB for me.

Well for me is only Raine that beats himself on Curve and Burn Burn.. Because honestly on that two albums there are masterpieces like Paper Moon or Rabbits (and i can tell also other songs) then I love the ep because probably we have the best Raine but well if we talk about "rock" (don't forget that OLP is a rock band) probably this ep is not their best in terms of rock sound.. Maybe it's just me.. However don't misunderstand me.. I really really like the EP and I can't wait to listen the second volume

I think Lanni was only involved with The Fix if I'm not mistaken (which, by the way, plenty of people online have been asking for). It would be a silly move not to release it.

This EP is awesome, but that would have rounded it out perfectly in my opinion.

wow... "hiding place for hearts" & especially "nice to meet you" are really great, raine's vocals really shone through and surprised me at how great they sounded.

reminds me a bit of the "not afraid" OLP era days...

haven't heard "falling into place" yet but am now looking forward to it, these studio songs really exceeded my expectations.

I can get behind this description. The sound is definitely more of a departure from BB and Curve, similar to Happiness from Clumsy and Naveed. And again with BB and Curve, there are plenty on those I love, but I've always felt something was lacking that I don't feel with these.

I'm sleep deprived, so I'm gonna keep rambling...

Pop or poppy has been used to describe some of the sound, but I'm not big fan of that word as it's so nondescript; it's still just a buzzword for commercial top 40 music to me. I think this is very much still alternative rock, which they've essentially been since Happiness. I don't have a single doubt that they'll have these songs down on stage, with some differences here and there, but we've seen that plenty from studio to stage already.

Yeah, I love these 4 songs way more than I thought I would... 'Falling into Place' has really grown on me the more and more I listen to it.

From what I gather, Vol. 2 (and in turn the full album) is due out October 6th? Is that official?

When I say "poppy" I don't mean commercial top 40 or generic. There are complex pop songs out there, and this EP has at least one or two. I use it more to label what I find more light and upbeat. Like "Falling Into Place" is hard to pin - it sounds more poppy in some parts and then moulds into alt-rock for me. Just an example of how the songs are not following a formulaic pattern.

I'm not a fan of trying to pin bands into one genre, to be honest. I would say this album is experimental. :)

I'm a longtime fan going back to the beginning and admittedly a much bigger fan of Clumsy through Spiritual Machines, but I'm die hard enough that I'll never shun an OLP album. After a few listens to Volume 1, I'm really digging it. Hiding Place has a few elements of old school OLP mixed with Burn Burn era, so I was into that from the first listen. Initially, I was a little unsure about Falling into Place and Nice to Meet You, but after putting it on repeat a few times through (which I always do with new OLP releases), those two songs really started to stand out and suddenly became really catchy to me. I definitely hear some experimental elements that steer clear of the unfortunate "generic" label that I struggle with when listening to HIPT and Burn Burn. Different but layered and interesting in my opinion. A definite atmospheric element to both of them. It kind of reminds me of how I feel about The New Pornographers whenever I'm getting into something new from them in the sense that it takes a few listens for all the intricacies to fall into place and catch on. Very much looking forward to Volume 2!

Maida sounds like pure garbage on each track. It's like someone drunk tried to cover him in a crappy bar on karaoke. The guitar, bass and drum might as well be royalty free crap you can download on a random website. Maida has to have multiple backing singers so much that it's embarrassing. I've been in denial since Gravity. (*casino dealer hand clap*) Peace, CM.

I somewhat agree on Raine's voice but I don't think it's THAT different than it's been in the past decade or so. Not bad but there are definitely moments he sounds tone deaf-ish lol.

Just finished listening though. Drop Me in the Water still doesn't really do anything for me. Hiding Place for Hearts is alright; hard to tell if it's something I'll think is cool but not really play much or if it'll be a grower. Fall into Place easily stood out to me as the best song here. Really catchy and not what you'd expect. Nice to Meet You is a decent enough pop rock song. Not exactly my kinda thing but I'll take it over the Burn Burn singles haha. Definitely has single potential though and I think it'd be a wise decision to build some hype for Somethingness Vol 2.
