Gravity to HIPT

Postby Tinman » 8/9/2012, 8:55 am

As drastically different as Gravity is from the first 4 albums, I find it even odder as to how different HIPT is from gravity. Granted, OLP's albums all sound very different, I think its obvious that Gravity was a huge divergence from the bands early sound, which did have some consistencies. It also seems like that change was probably in some way related to Mikes departure (though we'll never know the full story). I thought that the band, at the time, wanted to move in the direction of the gravity sound, and mike was probably resistant to it. This was my own interpenetration based on everything i've read, but I really don't think it was just a matter of mike's skill level, as raine said. Many reviewers of HIPT say that they were shocked, as Gravity seemed to show that the band was looking to move their music in a heavier, grittier direction. However, HIPT, to me, sounds closer to OLP's old sound, however, with poppier tracks designed around getting radio play and having catchy singles. It used to be my least favorite album, but after going back, A/L/S is undeniably solid, and Apology is amazing. There are quite a few songs on that CD that got overlooked by me, and I think many fans... and those few gems seem to be closer to OLP's earlier repertoire. So, I guess, after the success of Gravity, why is Gravity the only album that sounds like Gravity? Why break the trend? With HIPT 40+ tracks specifically due to finding that single, why not stick to what worked so well with the previous album? Even the shittier tracks on the album sound nothing like the previous album. Nor is it anything like BB.

I think they never wanted to be Nickelback -- I don't think they wanted to make the same album again, and I don't know if they necessarily cared if the next one reached quite the same level of commercial success.

I think the earlier versions of the sings they recorded for the album were a bit heavier and darker. The bottom really fell out from under the recording when their main supporters at Sony left the company. At that point they were really dictated to by the label. Ultimately that and the utter chaos of the recording sessions changed everything.

On HiPT Duncan told some years ago that in the 40+ songs there were songs that were "darker than anything Our Lady Peace had ever recorded" and "will never see the light of day."
I think that the mess in the recording of the album influenced negatively all the band(and then all the songs), however also i think that the there are some good songs...like Picture, A/L/S, Whipe that Smile, i like also Don't Stop....
About the commercial success i think that the band has earned less than it could get...OLP is an amazing band and for me it deserve a bigger commercial success...in the whole world not only in Canada...

All this talk about HIPT left me with a question...

OLP seems to hate Where Are You, I think even saying that they'd probably never play it again... Does anyone know the back story to this? I mean, I love the song and it certainly doesn't stand apart from other OLP songs in terms of inferior quality, so what's the deal? Am I just missing something?

I think this song was forced, especially the final version. The demo was slower and a little darker in sound.

The chorus was far better in the demo version

I'm talking about the Christmas video, that one was much slower and darker. But I agree, the chorus in the version they played on PromoSquad was a lot better.

oh ya the christmas video was good too...and the fan made version with the "where are you" part mixed with the promo squad chorus might even be the best version

they will likely never play that song again....angels/losing/sleep might be the only song from that record to ever be played live in the future...wipe that smile off your face is the only other song i see having a chance

They've played an acoustic version of picture a few times during this past tour!
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

To be honest....

I would take another Gravity any day.. It's an amazing CD.
I have to agree though some HIPT are awesome.. Picture, Apology and Boy are standout ones for me. I haven't listened to BB in years. I just can't compared to Curve.
and if i don't make it know that i've loved you all along.
