Rank Somethingness (Album & Songs) **originally Rank Curve**

Postby johnpeterson » 3/27/2012, 6:21 pm

here's something i think is better as a separate thread instead of cluttering the other thread. rank curve among the OLP discography, and then list the songs on curve.

i know it's early, but you can always change it up later. this way you can see your opinions evolve.

ALBUMS:
1. happiness
2. clumsy
3. spiritual machines
4. curve
5. naveed
6. gravity
7. healthy
8. burn burn

SONGS:
1. fire in the henhouse
2. heavyweight
3. find our way
4. as fast as you can
5. allowance
6. if this is it
7. will someday change
8. rabbits
9. window seat
10. mettle

Glad we can all agree on something!

Obviously this is hard to do so early, and in fact I've been enjoying Curve more and more with each listen. There's not one skippable song, even "Mettle", as long as you listen as part of the whole. The fact that every song is good makes it very hard to rank it in comparison to the first classic 4 albums, which themselves have some duds. I am greatly considering it a contender for the top 4. But for the time being:

ALBUMS:
1. Clumsy (1997)
2. Naveed (1994)
3. Happiness (1999)
4. Spiritual Machines (2000)
5. Curve (2012)
6. Gravity (2002)
7. Healthy in Paranoid Times (2005)
8. Burn Burn (2009)

SONGS:
1. Fire in the Henhouse
2. Find Our Way
3. Heavyweight
4. As Fast As You Can
5. Allowance
6. If This Is It
7. Will Someday Change
8. Rabbits
9. Window Seat
10. Mettle

I've listened a few times, and the only conclusion I've come to is that "Rabbits" is by far the best song on this thing

i dunno, burn burn isn't atrocious or anything but the other 7 albums are clear winners above it for me, and clearly for many others. to me it was like "gravity-lite" with mediocre raine vocals.

as for mettle, i don't dislike it as part of the flow of the album, and the chuvalo quotes are great, but i'll probably never listen to it on its own, as it's a bit boring. still very integral to the album though.

I said in the other topic how I thought it was interesting how all over the place we were on our opinions of the album. Though the statements people are making are universally positive, everyone had different favorites. I decided to use the rankings in this topic to come to a consensus of what people did and didn't like overall. After some quick math, here's what I found (keep in mind this is a small amount of data from the sample size, but still interesting and probably pretty indicative of what overall results would be):

(Yes, I know the chart is a bit messy)

OVERALL RANK (AV RANK)
1. SM (2)
2. Happiness (2.1)
3. Clumsy (3.4)
4. Curve (3.5)
5. Naveed (4)
6. Gravity (6.1)
7. HIPT (7)
8. Burn Burn (7.7)

All of the albums were within 3 ranking spots on everyone's list, I think these numbers are a fair and accurate portrayal of the strength of each album. Happiness and SM are the consensus 1/2 albums with Clumsy and Curve 3/4 and Naveed closely behind. I thought Naveed would be higher. Interesting how they get better til SM, then worse Gravity-BB, then good again for Curve. Curve wan't ranked lower thank 5 on anybody's list, and as high as 2nd (on my list).

OV. RANK (AV. RANK) NOTES:

1. Heavyweight (3.2) - Consistently high rank
2. Find Our Way (3.3) - Received one 8 rank, otherwise could have been ranked 1st overall
3. FITHH (3.4) - Another song with consistently high rankings that could have been 1st, but received one 9.
4. If This is It (4) - A wide range, from 1-8...very divisive track I think. Here is where the top songs and the middle songs divide.
5. AFAYC (5.4) - Similar to If This is It, wide range, people all over the place on this one. Ranked as high as first, as low as eighth.
6. Rabbits (5.5) - Surprisingly low, and would be even lower if not for one 1st place rank.
7. Will Someday Change (5.8) - This one was consistently ranked relatively low, highest rank was 3
8. Allowance (6.7) - Here we are starting to see some seperation between the medium songs and the low songs. Consistently below the medium.
9. Window Seat (7.2) - Though it did receive a 2, was ranked very low by everybody else.
10. Mettle (9.8) - Poor Mettle :D

Now the Curve songs numbers are much less representative of what people are thinking, given such a small sample size. Unlike the album rankings, the rankings for these songs are all over the place, as I said. For the most part, you can see there are a top group of songs that most people love, a middle group which has differing opinions and a bottom group which consistently scored low. Still, it speaks to the strength of the album that 7 different songs got first or second place votes.

NOTE: Numbers only taken from first 7 people to post their rankings, it took me a while to do this and another person posted :D Sorry.

So, I'm no mathemagician, but interesting results. Thoughts??

7. HIPT

The only one to rank Gravity over Curve. Maybe it was that time of my life or the fact that the Gravity tour was some of their best shows ever, but I really enjoy that CD.

1. Rabbits
2. If This is It
3. As Fast As You Can

Albums:
1 Spiritual Machines
2 Clumsy
3 Naveed
4 Happiness
5 Curve
6 Gravity
7 Burn Burn
8 Healthy

For me the rank is variable(except SM and Clumsy that are untouchables) in fact i remember that some time ago Gravity was 4th and Naveed 5th...now Naveed is on the podium! :D probably these depends from the moments of my life :) in fact i think that Curve maybe will come to the podium...is really hard...the worst for me is Healthy...i don't agree with those that place Burn Burn in last place...but these are ever personally opinions :)

For me is hard to write a song rank because in a album i don't rate the songs! They are part of a structure...however i can divide the songs in two parts...the amazing part that have FITHH, Heavyweight, If This Is It, Find Our Way and Rabbits...and the good part that have Allowance, As Fast As You Can, Will Someday Change...for Mettle i ever told that for me is like a RK track...i know that there is a good guitar but the song is entirely in spoken words by Chuvalo(except some verse)

1. SM
2. Happiness
those can swap positions every so often, but SM will always be my fav as that was the open that opened the band up to all of my friends
3. Clumsy
4. Naveed
5. HiPT and Burn Burn
7. Gravity
8. Curve

Maybe there is a learning CURVE needed for the new album, but right now, I'm not feeling it. Maybe I just need to listen to the actual CD, but it seems so weak. The music itself sounds so distant.

I know there is a ton of hatred out there for Burn Burn, but it holds a special place for me. I downloaded it while in Montpillier, France while waiting for a 4 hour train ride to Barcelona. That's all I listened to on that train ride, and the next week while in Spain. Seriously, all i listened to.

then I discovered "West Pauper..." by Kasabian while in Portugal

in terms of the curve songs

1. Heavyweight
2. If This Is It
3. Fire in the Hen House

The rest? the really just sound like distant muddled sounds with no true coherent direction

god I hope that feeling changes...

jesus, i know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but burn burn above both gravity and curve? I hope you really do have a really bad quality rip of curve... seriously, give it A LOT more listens man. clearly those circumstances surrounding your first listens of burn burn affected your opinion on it.... that is a pretty cool story about the train ride though.
